Week before your first year ➡️ Summer before your senior year

When Ethan Pyscher arrived at JMC, he planned on attending law school. Four years later, he's student teaching U.S. history and looking ahead to a career in education policy.

In the spring, Ethan will be among the first graduates of JMC's Public Affairs for Secondary Education major. The program combines JMC’s interdisciplinary public affairs curriculum with teacher preparation, allowing students to earn their bachelor’s degree and meet Michigan’s requirements for secondary social studies teacher certification in four years.

Congratulations to JMC alumna Dr. Yvette Efevbera (IR ’09), who was honored with the 2026 Innovator Award at the DC Spartans’ Green & White Gala earlier this month.

The award recognizes an MSU graduate who has distinguished themselves through significant professional accomplishment early in their career. A global health and gender equality leader, Efevbera has helped inform more than $100 million in investments worldwide. She is the founder and CEO of SHE Thinks Group LLC and an adjunct assistant professor at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health.

Among the many Madisonians celebrating Efevbera at the event were Portia Chana (SRP & PTCD ’24), who helped introduce Efevbera, and Kishan Modali (IR ’22), who presented the award.

Congratulations to the three Madisonians who are among MSU's nominees for the prestigious U.S. Rhodes Scholarship this year: Anastasia Breen, Eleanor Pugh and Ashlin Stover.

The Rhodes Scholarship is the oldest and perhaps most prestigious international scholarship program, enabling outstanding young people from around the world to study at the University of Oxford. Thirty-two U.S. Rhodes Scholarships are awarded annually.

MSU has produced 20 Rhodes Scholars to date and six of those recipients have been Madisonians.

Results of this year's competition will be determined in November.

How can democratic nations navigate an increasingly complex global security environment?

Join James Madison College and MSU’s Office of Research and Innovation on Oct. 21 at 5:30 p.m. in Case Hall for a conversation with retired Lt. Gen. Scott Kindsvater, whose distinguished military career includes leadership roles in the Middle East and at NATO.

Drawing on his experience, Kindsvater will explore the forces reshaping international security, the challenges facing democratic nations and the roles of policymakers, political leaders and citizens in building resilience in a changing world.

Join us Oct. 22 for James Madison College’s annual Jack Paynter Endowed Lecture, featuring Dr. Hugh Liebert of the United States Military Academy.

In 1776, Americans announced the birth of a new republic, and Edward Gibbon published the first volume of The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire. What did these two events have to do with one another?

In “The Decline and the Declaration: Gibbon and the American Founding,” Liebert will consider how Gibbon’s history applies to our own times. The lecture will explore how studying the decline of the ancient world allowed Gibbon to identify sources of strength in the modern world — and how it may offer Americans reasons for hope during the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.

The annual Paynter Lecture celebrates the life and intellectual curiosity of JMC founding faculty member Jack Paynter.

Join JMC and MSU Libraries on Thursday, Oct. 15, for a conversation with Gary Hoover, executive director of the Murphy Institute and professor of economics at Tulane University.

Drawing on his book, "Ladder or Lottery: Economic Promises and the Reality of Who Gets Ahead," Hoover will explore the promises of economic mobility, the realities of income inequality and what happens when society fails to deliver on expectations of opportunity.

An accomplished economist whose research spans poverty, political economy and public policy, Hoover is also the founding editor of the "Journal of Economics, Race, and Policy."

Join us Oct. 16 for James Madison College’s Fall 2026 Sennholz Lecture featuring Dr. Caleb Fuller, associate professor of economics at Grove City College. His lecture is titled “Storytelling and the Economic Point of View.”

Fuller is the author of “No Free Lunch: Six Economic Lies You’ve Been Taught and Probably Believe,” which unpacks common economic misconceptions and offers an understanding of why economics is important in everyday life.

Made possible through donor support, the annual Sennholz
Lecture carries forward a tradition of thoughtful exchange about political
economy, engaging JMC students and faculty as well as the broader MSU
community.

Congratulations to JMC junior Anabelle Sanchez, one of two MSU students selected for the 2026-28 Obama-Chesky Voyager Scholarship for Public Service!

A PTCD and public policy major, Anabelle has built her college experience around public service and a commitment to advancing educational equity for young people.

As a Voyager Scholarship awardee, she’ll receive financial aid, mentorship and support for a summer work-travel experience that will allow her to further explore educational inequities across the country.

Five Madisonians are among Michigan State University’s 12 nominees for the prestigious Marshall Scholarship! 🎉

Congratulations to JMC students Anastasia Breen, Isabel Buckles, Tarik Fermin, Eleanor Pugh and Ashlin Stover on this outstanding recognition.

The Marshall Scholarship supports approximately 50 of the country’s most outstanding scholars each year to pursue graduate study in the United Kingdom.

The results of this competition will be determined in the coming months.
