🎉 Congratulations to Michigan State University's newest ACES inductee, Jessica Barnes-Najor!

Barnes-Najor was recently inducted into the Academy of Community Engagement Scholarship (ACES), an international academy recognizing leaders who connect academics and communities to benefit society.

As MSU Provost Laura Lee McIntyre noted, Barnes-Najor's work exemplifies how meaningful collaboration can advance both scholarship and community well-being, particularly with Indigenous and Native communities.

We recognized Elena Ruíz and her community partners, WHEAT and Sara's House, in March with the 2026 Distinguished Partnership Award for Community-Engaged Research. Their collaboration was also honored with the 2026 Community Engagement Scholarship Award. Through these community-led partnerships, the team has helped expand critical services for survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking while strengthening the capacity of the organizations that support them. Elena Ruíz, Professor of Philosophy and founder and director of the Research Institute for Structural Change at Michigan State University, has worked side by side with two Detroit organizations — WHEAT and Sara's House — to expand services for survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking. Together they've securing nearly $900,000 in funding and established the first paid staff positions in either organization's history.

This work earned Ruíz two 2026 MSU University Outreach and Engagement awards: the Community Engagement Scholarship Award and the Distinguished Partnership Award for Community-Engaged Research.
