Claims like "cancer risk starts from the first drop" make great headlines, but do they reflect the actual science? Last week we had the opportunity to hear from Dr. Bob Roth in the same week that his critical evaluation of the data on alcohol and cancer risk was published. Bob's work reminds us that dose matters (we all know that the dose makes the poison), physiological context matters, and how we communicate our science matters.

Congratulations Dr. Restini!

Congratulations to Carolina Restini, PharmD, Ph.D., professor in the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology at the MSU College of Osteopathic Medicine, on receiving the 2026 Outstanding Program Award – Director Designation from the Association of STEMM Pathway and Bridge Programs (ASPBP)!

The award recognizes Dr. Restini’s leadership as founding director of the Foundry for Innovative Research and Education (FIRE) at MSUCOM. The Director Designation honors program directors whose leadership and guidance are instrumental to the success of STEMM pathway and bridge programs.

Through FIRE, Dr. Restini has helped create opportunities for learners to explore research and education while building pathways toward careers in health care and biomedical science.

Celebrating Research Excellence at MSU Phm/Tox!

We’re proud to celebrate our students and postdoctoral researchers who received awards at the recent Michigan Society for Toxicology meeting!

These awards recognize the hard work, dedication, and contributions of our researchers. We’re excited to see members of our Pharm/Tox community recognized for their efforts and accomplishments!

Congratulations to all of our award recipients on this well-deserved recognition!

We had an amazing couple of days celebrating Dr. Greg Fink's lifetime achievements at the American Heart Association Hypertension Scientific Sessions. Greg received the Excellence Award for Hypertension Research, a well-deserved honor. Special thanks go to Dr. Stephanie Watts for nominating him and making the whole event magical.

We had a brilliant day today celebrating Dr. Courtney Sulentic, our 2026 Kenneth E. Moore Distinguished Alum Lecturer. Courtney, a professor at Wright State University, earned her PhD in Pharm Tox in 1999. She completed her research in Dr. Norb Kaminski’s lab, and Norb introduced Courtney today before we heard about her amazing research on B cells and the aryl hydrocarbon receptor.

We are excited to share another new publication from the Pharm Tox Team. This one comes from the Kaminski Lab, with PhD student Joel Marty as the first author. This study highlights the effects of cannabis and THC on inflammation in patients living with HIV.
