Rushing is a loose term Fraternities use for when an interested individual eligible for pledging, a “rush,” attends events hosted by the Fraternity designed to let the Fraternity get to know its guests better and for prospects to meet the Brothers. Every year, there is a “Rush
Week” about two to three weeks into the spring and fall semesters, where Phi Kappa Sigma hosts events everyday of the week. At the conclusion of the week, the Fraternity decides who, out of all of the “rushes” they would like to extend offers, or “bids,” to and then these individuals have the opportunity to pledge the Fraternity. Does the Fraternity choose who gets to pledge or do “rushes” just sign up? This is actually a fairly common misconception. The Fraternity decides who is extended a bid. The rush can accept or deny a bid, but only after the Fraternity approves his candidacy to do so. I like the guys in the Fraternity, but what’s the deal with pledging? Will I have time to do my work? What about my sport/club/music/etc.? The pledging process is a heavily guarded secret within the Fraternity. We have an extremely strict no-hazing policy. Also, we can guarantee that every “pledge” will be given more than enough time to complete their work and engage in their activities on campus. We would not want anyone to sacrifice their passions in order to pledge. In fact, being involved in multiple things is probably one of the reasons you were extended a bid.
