Michigan State University Earth & Environmental Sciences This page serves as an online community for alumni, students, faculty, and friends of the Department of Earth and Environmental Science at MSU.

Faculty and students in the Department of Earth & Environmental Sciences study the changes in and interactions among the geosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere, and atmosphere on temporal scales ranging from "deep time" (millions and billions of years) to those influenced by humans and at spatial scales from microscopic to global. The Department provides high quality learning experiences for students at undergraduate and graduate levels, that includes preparation for those interested in educational, academic, industry and government careers. Faculty, students, and alumni serve as resource persons to private and public sector enterprises, teachers, and government agencies at all levels, providing knowledge and scientifically informed comment on important local, regional, global, and extra terrestrial events, such as causes and effects of climate change, contaminants in the environment related to human health, natural disasters, the evolution of and search for life throughout our solar system, environment and resource issues, and science education.

Rocky got a rare opportunity to visit the famous "Celsius Rock" in Sweden, where Anders Celsius had the sea level marked in 1731. Sea level was carved on the rock in 1831 and 1931 as well. Sea level is falling there because the land is rising up at a rate of about 1/3 inch per year, an ongoing response to the melting of the ice sheet at the end of the last ice age (the "Last Glacial Maximum", about 20,000 years ago).

Rocky is in Sweden. Later, he will explore the Celsius Rock, then Portugal and Albania.

Exciting news from S. Shawn Wei, associate professor in MSU’s Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences.

Eighty years ago, a massive tsunami devastated parts of Hawaii, Alaska, Washington and Oregon following an earthquake off the coast of Alaska. A Michigan State University team is launching a project to study the underwater fault system where it originated – and whether it still poses a risk today.
