Maksymilian Chruszcz, Ph.D., Walter F. Patenge Chair in the MSU College of Osteopathic Medicine and professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, has been named co-chair of the World Health Organization (WHO)/International Union of Immunological Societies’ Allergen Nomenclature Sub-Committee.

In this new role, Dr. Chruszcz will help review newly discovered allergens and determine which meet the criteria to receive an official designation from the committee, helping researchers around the world speak the same scientific language.

Congratulations to Carolina Restini, PharmD, Ph.D., professor in the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology at the MSU College of Osteopathic Medicine, on receiving the 2026 Outstanding Program Award – Director Designation from the Association of STEMM Pathway and Bridge Programs (ASPBP)!

The award recognizes Dr. Restini’s leadership as founding director of the Foundry for Innovative Research and Education (FIRE) at MSUCOM. The Director Designation honors program directors whose leadership and guidance are instrumental to the success of STEMM pathway and bridge programs.

Through FIRE, Dr. Restini has helped create opportunities for learners to explore research and education while building pathways toward careers in health care and biomedical science.

Congratulations to Barbara Ross-Lee, D.O., MSU College of Osteopathic Medicine Class of 1973 alumna, on receiving the 2026 Distinguished Alumni Award from the D.C. Spartans!

Presented during the D.C. Spartans Green and White Gala on Oct. 3, the award recognizes a Spartan whose exceptional professional achievements, leadership and service reflect a lasting commitment to making an impact in their profession and community.

A pioneering physician, educator, dean and advocate, Dr. Ross-Lee has helped shape osteopathic medicine and medical education throughout her distinguished career.

This World Mental Health Day, let’s talk about the connection between mental health and addictive disorders.

Addictive disorders, including substance use disorders, can affect anyone. They also frequently occur alongside mental health conditions such as anxiety and depression.

For some people, substances may be used as a way to cope with difficult emotions or symptoms. At the same time, substance use can contribute to or worsen mental health symptoms. The relationship is complex, and that’s why recognizing and treating both is an important part of whole-person care.

For future health care professionals, understanding addiction means looking beyond the substance to the whole person: their mental health, experiences, environment and overall well-being.

There is no shame in seeking help. Addiction and co-occurring mental health conditions are treatable, and recovery is possible.
