Can a union decide who wins in Michigan? UAW’s Fain says yes

LANSING, Mich. (News 10) - United Auto Workers President Shawn Fain visited Lansing Tuesday, urging union members to vote in November.

Dozens of UAW members packed a conference hall Tuesday for the union’s Michigan Community Action Program (CAP) Conference.

Michigan State University professor Maite Tapia said UAW endorsements are not directives to members but carry significance. “It’s a strong signal that is being sent, because the UAW here has political clout. They are an important player in this landscape,” Tapia said. Tapia said the union’s influence goes beyond who it endorses.

She pointed to research showing union members are statistically more likely to vote than non-members, meaning the UAW’s political impact starts with turnout, not just persuasion.

As artificial intelligence continues to reshape workplaces, questions about who has a voice in decisions about new technologies have become increasingly important. In a Sept. 7 article, The Detroit News examined the potential effects of AI on workers, including concerns about workplace disruption, job displacement and layoffs.

Since becoming a federal holiday on June 28, 1894, Labor Day has served as a time to recognize the contributions of working people and the labor movement that helped shape the American workplace.

Today, we honor the dedication and achievements of workers and recognize those who have fought to advance dignity and fairness in the workplace. Their efforts left a lasting impact on the world of work we know today.

From all of us at Michigan State University's School of Human Resources and Labor Relations, we wish you a safe and happy Labor Day.
