This Friday, the Michigan State University School of Packaging will break ground on the next phase of Packaging 2.0 — a transformational expansion that will nearly double the size of the existing building and create new opportunities for teaching, research and collaboration.

Muhammad Rabnawaz, an MSU College of Agriculture and Natural Resources Faculty Laureate and professor in the top-ranked School of Packaging, is using the $540,000 grant to explore these materials through experiments and artificial intelligence-driven machine learning techniques.

The goal is to develop materials that break down in composting environments without leaving behind persistent plastic particles. Rabnawaz said the project could potentially help enable the creation of a $40 billion annual compostable packaging market.
