E. Ray Swan, retired president and chief executive officer of the Educational Institute of the American Hotel & Motel Association, is the 2000 recipient of EI’s Arthur Landstreet Award. This award is presented annually to an individual who has significantly advanced the quality and importance of hospitality education. The award is named after the Tennessee hotelier who founded the Institute in 1953. Swan received the award during the “Celebration of Excellence” held during the AH&MA Spring Conference and Lodging Expo, April 12-14, in Phoenix.
Swan served as president/CEO of the Educational Institute from 1978 to 1996, taking EI from infancy to adulthood. Under his leadership, EI became the world leader in educational and training resources for the hospitality industry.
Swan designed EI products to meet the needs of industry, academia, and the military. He stressed the practical, and insisted the EI materials be easy to read or view, easy to understand, and easy to retain. He felt training should be fun, interesting, and loaded with information that fit the industry’s training needs.
During his years with EI, Swan spearheaded the development of one-day industry-taught seminars, an annual management institute for smaller hotel operators, and the Executive Academy (now President’s Academy) for corporate planners and CEOs. Swan’s tenure also included the expansion of EI’s professional certification programs and textbook and course offerings. Prior to leading EI, Swan served in trade association management for 30 years.
Now retired, Swan and Doe, his wife, live in Arizona, where Swan enjoys playing golf and puttering in his woodworking shop.
Established in 1953 as a nonprofit educational foundation of the American Hotel & Motel Association, the Educational Institute is the world’s largest hospitality communication resource center, providing quality training and educational materials for the hospitality industry.
