Today is MSU’s Give Green Day — and YOU are my why.

To our CVM family of students, staff, house officers, faculty, alumni, and supporters; and to our clients, collaborators, Michiganders, and animal lovers: your connection to MSU’s College of Veterinary Medicine is what makes this community so special. It’s a privilege to do this work in support of you and the future we’re building together.

This marks the start of something transformational. Today, every gift will be amplified - up to $1,000,000 - thanks to the extraordinary generosity of Tracy Hickman, Chad Munger, and the Hickman Family Foundation.

This is the first philanthropic investment in bringing our College of the Future to life - reimagining how we teach, discover, and deliver care, powered by modern, flexible facilities that advance compassionate care, energize hands-on learning, and accelerate discovery.

This is how we change the world.
Join us as we build the future of veterinary medicine. 💚

My reason why: You!

I couldn't be more proud to support the College of Veterinary Medicine — as we start building our College of the Future — on Give Green Day.

Thank you to all who not only support our mission to learn, heal, discover, and protect, but also to all who build our vision every day.

This past Friday, I had the privilege of catching the end of Dr. Sue Ewart’s final lecture in the Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences.

Alongside Dr. Steve Carey, incoming Associate Dean for Student Engagement and Success, I watched Sue work her magic in Respiratory I. When she tried to wrap up the Kahoot! review, the students responded with a collective, “No—just a few more questions!” And then came a standing ovation. 👏

Sue is a model of intellectual rigor, endless curiosity, and a genuine investment in people—mentoring countless students across the College of Veterinary Medicine. Her impact will continue to shape this community for years to come.

Thank you, Sue, for the countless ways you’ve invested in our students, our college, and our community. You’ve made us better. 💚🤍

Thank you for lifting each other up and for the remarkable work you do every day.

Immensely proud of the teamwork across campus—and across Michigan—that has been key to our response to highly pathogenic avian influenza. And with the disease still present, we're still pushing forward.

One Health is at the heart of what we do as veterinarians. Our expertise extends from diagnosing and managing animal disease outbreaks, to caring for beloved pets, to advancing new therapies through research that benefits both animals and people. Just as we rely on our partners in public health, agriculture, and natural resources, they rely on us—and together, we make our communities and our world healthier.

After a whirlwind trip around the Upper Peninsula on the Spartan Bus Tour, I’m glad to be home. We met dozens of MSU friends and partners, and I’m feeling energized to take what I’ve learned to CVM. Grateful for the opportunity to connect with so many Michigan innovators!

Shout out to our Associate Dean of Research and Graduate Studies, Dr. Jim Luyendyk, for sitting in on a fireside chat about expanding research partnerships in Northern Michigan.

(While I took some of these photos myself, thanks to MSU photographers Derrick L. Turner and Garret Morgan for capturing our adventure.)

Still digesting a Homecoming weekend of fun, family, and connection with Spartans from near and far. And not going to lie: I'm quite content with tying with my fellow dean, Dr. deJong, on our epic co****le match — it's a fitting metaphor for how our Colleges partner equally to advance One Health for all. 😉

We recently kicked off our annual Celebration of Generosity with a special demonstration by Dr. Jane Manfredi, the Mary Anne McPhail Dressage Chair in Equine Sports Medicine. It was the perfect start to an evening that highlighted the strength of CVM’s supportive community of alumni and friends.

During the event, we honored this year’s Philanthropists of the Year: Dr. Pete (DVM ’74) and Sharon VanVranken. From scholarships to stethoscopes, the VanVrankens have gone above and beyond to equip our students to make the most of their time here.

I’m grateful for the opportunity to recognize them—and all those who show such immeasurable kindness to our Spartans.
