An inspiring day at Michigan State University hosting distinguished university leaders from across India for the U.S. Department of State’s International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) on October 12, 2026!

The day began with a morning roundtable alongside the Asian Studies Center at Michigan State University, Asia Hub and the Burgess Institute, exploring models for collaborative research and academic partnerships, from student and faculty exchange to Collaborative Online Interactive Learning (COIL), and interdisciplinary research to student entrepreneurship.

On an unusually warm, golden autumn day, delegates enjoyed a scenic campus walk across MSU’s green grounds and connected with members of the MSU India Student Organization. The afternoon featured a visit to the Secure and Efficient Autonomous Systems Lab hosted by Professor Shaunak D. Bopardikar to see how university engineering research translates into global innovation.

Thank you to Maksat Khalyk Халықтың Мақсаты from our 2026 Meta University MBA Program for sharing Kazakh culture with us by playing the dombra—a traditional string instrument from Kazakhstan—during our end-of-program ceremony at the University Club. Maksat is a leading economist in Kazakhstan, who created the Kazakh language MBA program in Meta University in 2023.

This is the second time we partnered with the Almaty-based Meta University on Strategic Leadership training for Meta MBA students. Over a period of 10-day, 19 students connected with MSU faculty, the local community, relevant industries, and experienced cultural excursions in Michigan.

What is even more memorable about this program and others like it at VIPP, is the intercultural connections that are made. From sharing American culture at a top research university to sharing Kazakh culture, like this performance, from leaders making global impact.

The 2026 Meta University MBA Program is a collaboration between the Visiting International Professional Program (VIPP) at Michigan State University and the Graduate School Business of META University KZ.

This 10-day program in East Lansing focused on the training of Strategic Leadership, with more than 19 MBA students from Meta University. Students connected with the local community, relevant industries, and experienced cultural excursions in Michigan.

Their site visit to the Meijer Distribution Center in Lansing, Michigan was an opportunity for the students to learn about the company’s modern supply-chain management, including automated systems, inventory control, logistics, transportation, and warehouse operations.

This visit provided participants with insights into retail distribution, operational efficiency, technology adoption, workforce management, and strategies for managing large-scale supply chains.

Congratulations to the 2026 Meta University MBA Program participants, and thank you all for joining us to further your professional learning, here at Michigan State University 🎓

This 10-day visit was a collaboration between the Visiting International Professional Program (VIPP) at MSU and the Graduate School Business of Meta University, Kazakhstan. More than 19 scholars from META University KZ traveled here to focus on the training of Strategic Leadership, by connecting with MSU faculty, the local community, relevant industries, and experienced cultural excursions in Michigan.

In the classroom, these scholars had the opportunity of learning from Dr. Keith Niblett from the MSU Broad College of Business, and Professor Ross Chowles from the department of Advertising + Public Relations at the Michigan State University College of Communication Arts & Sciences.

“They’re very interactive, they’re very interested, and they have knowledge about their own location and their own country—now they have to broaden their knowledge to look at a world perspective,” Keith said after his first session with the group.

Spending this 10-day program with teachers like Keith and Ross, these scholars learned how to develop effective strategies in leading and managing organizations, as well as how to think critically in developing and marketing ideas for the public from a global perspective.

Site visits to the Meijer Distribution Center, Michigan State Capitol Building, Ford Factory and Museum, and the Peckham Company provided visualizations for making these ideas a reality.

Featuring another bright scholar in honor of 35 years of VIPP! 🤩🎉

From Kazakhstan to campus, Bolashak scholar Isatay Jakupov, Ph.D. has taken numerous opportunities to dive deeper into scientific collaboration within the related fields of veterinary science and agriculture.

Dr. Jakupov recently completed a 12-month scientific internship at Michigan State while representing Kazakhstan and the Saken Seifullin Universiteti 🇰🇿

His internship in the reproductive physiology laboratory under the supervision of Dr. Augusto Madureira explored various methods for detecting pregnancy-specific proteins in cattle 🧬👨‍🔬

One of his notable achievements was co-authoring a scientific publication with Dr. Madureira: "Clinical trials of a test kit for the visual diagnosis of uterine diseases in cows," successfully published in the Central Asian Journal of Veterinary Science in 2026.

“I appreciated the enthusiasm and dedication he brought to the lab during his time with us,” Dr. Madureira said. “He worked independently while also being receptive to feedback and collaboration, and consistently approached the work with curiosity, care, and professionalism.”

Utilizing the immersive scientific experiences he gained at MSU, Jakupov will continue his work in the study of modern veterinary diagnostic methods and strengthen international professional connections for future research projects.

Club Spartan, China officially launches in Nanjing during our Alumni Reunion this month!

Club Spartan, China is built as an alumni networking platform, connecting VIPP, Michigan State University, and alumni from China and around the world. We will create opportunities together: promote academic exchange, educational innovation, and professional collaboration. Most importantly, we want VIPP alumni, wherever they may be, to feel a sense of belonging.

The five VIPP alumni invited to serve on the founding Leadership Team bring diverse expertise and share a deep connection with VIPP and MSU. They will lead the development of organizational policies, alumni engagement, and initial programming. Please welcome our leaders!

Strengthening Global Higher Education Partnerships in Michigan! 🌍 🎓

Last week, we were honored to host 13 higher education leaders and delegates from across Africa as part of the Department of State’s International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) project on "Strategic University Partnerships".

Organized locally by the Michigan Council for Citizen Diplomacy (MCCD) and hosted by the Visiting International Professional Program (VIPP) at Michigan State University, this initiative highlighted the vital role of IVLP and VIPP in driving international partnership development, global capacity building, and collaborative academic innovation.

A key highlight was our roundtable networking and dinner connect event at MSU, where our visiting African delegates engaged directly with university leaders from across the state—including representatives from Wayne State University, Central Michigan University, Oakland University, Lawrence Technological University, and Research Universities for Michigan - RU4M. The event received outstanding feedback from the delegates, building a strong foundation for future cross-continental research and institutional collaboration.

A heartfelt thank you to our fellow Michigan Community-Based Members (CBMs), Global Ties Detroit and Global Ties Kalamazoo, for your partnership in making this joint, statewide IVLP project a success! International exchange and citizen diplomacy thrive when we collaborate across our communities.

The Visiting International Professional Program is excited to be hosting a tailgate for MSU's home football game this weekend against the Nebraska Cornhuskers.

Tailgating is an American tradition to gather the day of a football game to grill, play yard games, socialize, and cheer for our team.

All are welcome, please bring your friends and family for an afternoon of food, games, and the chance to win a free ticket to the football game that evening!
