We’re proud to share that our Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) program has earned the maximum 10-year accreditation from the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS)!

This achievement recognizes the hard work of our faculty, staff, clinical partners and students who help maintain the high standards of education and clinical training that prepare future medical laboratory professionals.

Last Thursday, BLDSA welcomed Dr. Soo Hyun Ahn, Assistant Professor and Core Manager of the Flow Cytometry Core at MSU, for a Speaker Series presentation. Dr. Ahn shared insights from her postdoctoral research at MSU, exploring the role of the thymus in maternal immune tolerance during pregnancy.

She also discussed findings from research on Aire-deficient male mice, including the presence of inflammatory cells in the epididymis, illustrated through striking immunohistochemistry images. To conclude, Dr. Ahn highlighted recent advancements in flow cytometry and how emerging technologies are expanding the possibilities for scientific research.

We’re very grateful to Dr. Ahn for sharing her research and expertise with our students!

BLD 314L students recently put their flow cytometry knowledge to the test with Dr. McQuiston’s favorite flow game!

This interactive activity helps students strengthen their understanding of the flow cytometry process, with the top-scoring teams in each section earning some highly coveted GIANTmicrobes 🦠 Congratulations to the winning teams!

HUGE thank you to everyone who joined us for the BLD 100th Anniversary Homecoming Tailgate! It was wonderful celebrating this milestone with our alumni, students, faculty, staff and friends.

Congratulations to our TV giveaway winner and all of our other prize winners! We loved seeing everyone enjoy Lab Coat Latte, our special 100th Anniversary flavor from the MSU Dairy Store. We’re also grateful to the Strolling Spartans for stopping by and sharing their music with us!

We couldn’t have made this celebration possible without our 100th Anniversary Committee, student volunteers, and BLD faculty and staff. We’re so grateful for all the hard work that went into making this tailgate one to remember! 💚

The Biomedical Laboratory Diagnostics (BLD) Program at Michigan State University is celebrating their 100 year anniversary this year!

The celebrate this amazing achievement, they have created a new tasty flavor that will be available here at the store this month! Lab Coat Latte is an espresso based ice cream with a caramel swirl and brownie pieces mixed in.

Even better, you can try this flavor at their 100th Anniversary Homecoming Tailgate on October 10th at North Kedzie Hall! Join them for food, football, opportunities to reconnect with the BLD community and of course, Dairy Store ice cream!

Shoutout to our BLD alumni who recently took the stage at the South Central Association of Clinical Microbiologists (SCACM) 2026 Fall Meeting! Adam Czubachowski, MPH, MLS(ASCP)cm; Nick Decker, MBA, MLS(ASCP); and Julius Kuya, MLS(ASCP)cm shared their expertise on topics ranging from arboviruses and bioterrorism agents to sepsis and advanced laboratory technology.

Dr. Rachel Morris represented BLD at the meeting and had the chance to reconnect with our alumni speakers and a few BLD students completing their clinical rotations who stopped by. It was great to see BLD students, alumni and faculty together at this year’s meeting!

In MGI 465L with Dr. Mendoza, students put clinical microbiology skills into practice as they worked through the identification of a bacterial pathogen responsible for a UTI. Students used a combination of laboratory methods to examine bacterial characteristics and piece together the clues needed to identify the pathogen.
