100 years of BLD. 100 years of Spartan impact.

Since 1926, the Biomedical Laboratory Diagnostics Program at Michigan State University has evolved alongside laboratory science, preparing generations of Spartans to make an impact in healthcare, research and beyond.

The halls are quiet. The labs are ready. And another year at BLD is about to begin.

From the first day of class to late nights studying, these spaces have been part of countless BLD journeys over the past 100 years. Soon, they’ll be filled with the conversations, discoveries and memories that make our program what it is.

Please join us as we celebrate Dr. Hoag and her many years of dedication to the Biomedical Laboratory Diagnostics Program!

Former students and friends are invited to a Retirement Reception for Dr. Hoag on Tuesday, September 1, from 3:30–4:30 p.m. on the 3rd Floor of North Kedzie Hall. Stop by to share memories, celebrate Dr. Hoag’s career and wish her well in retirement.

Congratulations to Kasandra Liske, our Laboratory Coordinator, on receiving MSU’s Environmental Health & Safety Laboratory Safety Certificate of Recognition. Her dedication to maintaining safe, organized, and effective laboratory spaces plays an important role in supporting our students, faculty, and research activities. We are grateful for all she does behind the scenes and proud to celebrate this well-deserved achievement!

Each summer, BLD medical laboratory science students complete clinical rotations at one of 25 affiliated clinical sites across Michigan and Ohio. During their rotations, students gain hands-on experience in hematology, microbiology, immunohematology, and chemistry while working alongside laboratory professionals.

BLD advisor Nicole Richardson recently visited students at their clinical sites and brought along cookies from the MSU Bakery! 🍪💚

This week, we welcomed students from the Lansing School District as part of the MI GEAR UP Summer Program!

Students explored the field of medical laboratory science, learned about the vital role laboratory professionals play in healthcare, discussed career opportunities, and gained hands-on experience in the lab.

Thank you to everyone who helped introduce the next generation of healthcare professionals to the exciting world of laboratory science! 🧪💚

Shoutout to our BLD students who participated in the 16th annual MidSURE Symposium! Their research, hard work, and dedication were on full display as they represented BLD among undergraduate researchers from across campus. Congratulations on a job well done!

Through coursework, hands-on experiences, and collaboration with peers and faculty, BLD students develop the critical thinking, attention to detail, problem-solving, and communication skills needed to succeed in laboratory science and beyond.
