The Quello Center was launched in 1998, as The James H. Quello Center for Telecommunication Management and Law, but is increasingly known and referred to as the James and Mary Quello Center or simply the Quello Center. It was established as a multi-disciplinary center within the Department of Media and Information at Michigan State University, but its faculty work in collaboration with faculty fro

m across the College of Communication Arts and Sciences, the broader University, and associates worldwide. The scope of the center has broadened with the rise of the Internet and digital media, but its mission has continued to focus on research that will improve understanding of policy choices and management options affected by change in communication technologies, industries, and consumer choices. The Quello Center pursues these goals through a variety of activities, including: the conduct of rigorous interdisciplinary research; an interest in policy and practice at multiple levels from local and state to national and global arenas; providing opportunities, such as symposia and conferences, to facilitate dialogue among policy makers, scholars, industry executives, and consumer interest groups; participation in other events and proceedings that evaluate important communication policy developments; and providing expertise and independent research to policy making institutions.

As conversations around data centers increase in communities across Michigan, ComArtSci faculty member Jean Hardy is helping navigate those conversations.

Much of that work is taking shape through the Quello Center, Michigan State University's Emerging Digital Infrastructures initiative, which develops research, educational resources, and practical tools to help communities prepare for emerging forms of digital infrastructure.

On easing community concerns, Hardy said, “A lot of them don't actually need to worry about data center development. It's about talking them through these things, how they happen, what's required and offering a frank evaluation of their community.”

Fascinating brown bag lunch talk by Dr. Chris Adami, Department of Microbiology, Genetics, & Immunology, who shared his work on the dynamics of inequality. His work starts from a highly stylized public goods game and develops a series of insights on how inequality emerges from the interaction of rational, self-interested actors.
