Stanley and Selma Hollander Lecture Series
Juan Cortés is a Colombian artist, researcher and creative technologist working at the intersection of digital culture, memory studies, and ecological politics. His practice explores how technological systems shape historical narratives, territorial governance, and botanical knowledge, with a particular focus on South America.

Lecture — On Vegetal Politics
Tuesday, October 13, 6:00 pm, 107 S. Kedzie
The lecture examines how botanical classification, agricultural data systems and computational models shape the perception, ordering and governance of vegetal life. Drawing on Juan’s artistic research and on works such as Botánica Transgénica, On Vegetal Politics and A Tale of Two Seeds: Sound and Silence in Latin America’s Andean Plains, he look at how these systems operate as colonial infrastructures that standardise life while erasing local forms of knowledge, and at how artistic practice can open other ways of sensing, representing and relating to plant life across ecological, technological and political registers.


Workshop — Escaping the Model: Classification, Taxonomy and Artistic Research
Friday, October 16, location/time TBA
The workshop treats classification and taxonomy as cultural, historical and technological frameworks rather than neutral systems of description. It builds on an article Juan co-authored with José-Carlos Mariátegui on the limitations of the Linnaean categorisation model in the age of AI, and asks how living forms are named, ordered, reduced and made legible through scientific, archival and computational structures. Participants work through discussion and practical exercises toward speculative and artistic strategies for handling what resists classification — alternative forms of representation, notation and relational knowledge.

Join us on October 15 from 3-4p in Communication Arts and Sciences room 145 for a Mary Gardner Lecture in partnership with the Knight Center for Environmental Journalism and the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies.

Maria Isabel Torres will explore the challenges and opportunities of covering environmental stories across Latin America.

Drawing on her experience at Mongabay Latam, she will discuss how reporters produce rigorous, innovative, and impactful journalism that challenges conventional norms and informs public understanding and accountability.

MACLAS is pleased announce our second interdisciplinary digital conference, a two-day event which will take place on November 12-13, 2026. We invite undergraduate students, graduate students, and scholars from all fields—humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, arts, and professional programs—to present their work. Presentations on any topic related to Latin America, the Caribbean, or Latino/a/e communities—past or present—will be considered.

The conference is free and open to all who wish to observe. There are no fees to submit your work, but you must be a MACLAS member to participate in the conference. Please forward new membership applications, relevant fees, and any questions about the conference to the MACLAS Digital Conference Planning and Awards Committee at [email protected].
All conference presentations are eligible to win MACLAS’s new Jack Child Award, which recognizes outstanding papers and presentations at MACLAS Digital Conference and Lecture Series events. A minimum of two undergaduate student presentations and two graduate student presentations will be selected from the digital conference. Award recipients will be selected by the Digital Conference Planning and Awards Committee, and will be invited to present their work at MACLAS’s annual (physical) spring conference with their conference fees waived.
