MSU American Indian and Indigenous Studies We believe these are issues that transcend traditional boundaries between academic disciplines. Michigan State University’s AISP is designed to meet this need.

The American Indian Studies Program (AISP) at Michigan State University seeks to form an understanding of American Indian cultures and identities, the place of American Indian/ Indigenous people in today’s world, and the changing demands of American Indian/Indigenous peoples in the pursuit of cross-cultural diversity. To understand the complexity of these subjects and to respond to them thoughtfully, students require a range of training both across disciplines and outside university settings. The Native population of Michigan is proportionally one of the largest of those states east of the Mississippi. The American Indian Studies undergraduate minor at MSU insures that the state's largest university offers a program of study that explores the indigenous foundations of this country and recognizes the continuing contribution of Native/Indigenous peoples to North American and Global society.

We finished up with our wiigwaas jiimaan (birchbark canoe) build yesterday, and our fingers and feet are a little sore, but our hearts are full. It was a nice reminder that making things in community is never just about making the thing, instead it's about being in fellowship with community, joking, spilling tea, eating, laughing, all the while building something very cool together.

Chi miigwech to inaugural MSU Indigenous Artist-in-Residence Ron Paquin and his apprentices and helpers Adam Avery, Josh Homminga, Rob Rudd, Jason Van Alstine, and Ruben Blackcloud. Special thanks to Ron’s business manager and wife Molly, and to everyone who came out to help and be in community. Big shout out to the Michigan Traditional Arts Program and the Native American Institute for helping make this happen.

We had a wonderful Native Welcome event last night! Miigwech to all the folks who came out to support our new students and welcome our artist-in-residence, Ron Paquin.

The community is also sending prayers to Kevin Leonard and his family. The event wasn't the same without you, Kevin. Also, turns out you're our photo guy!! We collectively scrapped this sub-par collection together. 🤣 Miigwech for all your work helping put the event together.

If you have any photos from last night, please add to the chat.
