In 2016, PCON Alumnus Karl Schindler ’15 established the Spirit of Nursing Award to honor strong female role models from his nursing journey.

This award is given to a student in her final semester who is also a single parent. This year's recipient is Serena Steckel, a dedicated fourth-semester student, who balances her studies with full-time work and caring for her two young boys. Faculty praise her positivity and compassion towards patients. Serena will join the NICU team at Crouse in July. Congratulations to Serena on her upcoming graduation in May 2026, and a heartfelt thank you to Karl Schindler for his continued support!
