Civil rights leader Coretta Scott King was born .

An activist in her own right, King was a powerful advocate for racial justice, peace and human rights. After the assassination of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., she continued his work, organizing, speaking and building institutions that carried the movement forward.

She founded the Martin Luther King Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change, focused on advancing voting rights and addressing poverty, hunger and unemployment.

Her leadership helped ensure the movement did not stop.
