Edinboro University History Club - Public Page The Edinboro History Club is a SGA recognized, faculty advised, student run organization.

This group is dedicated to instruct fellow students on the importance of History and how it has effected the modern world in which we live. Don't forget, this Monday, February 23, Professor Sababu will be giving a presentation on behalf of the History Club at 6:30pm in Wiley 117!

"This presentation narrates the existence of injustice and brutality of black men as a historical phenomenon unparalleled in this country. Hence, a discussion of the image of blackness and of black men specifically is worthy of examination. Second, the construction of the idea of “whiteness” and the law has had a devastating impact on black life. Thus, the current fad of stating “black life matters” is a historical phenomenon that precedes Missouri, New York, and Cleveland and seemingly will continue without and maybe in spite of protest among a wide segment of society that crosses racial and ethnic boundaries."

200 years ago today, an Erie, PA-built American fleet commanded by Oliver Hazard Perry defeated and captured the entire British Lake Erie fleet at Put-in-Bay. During that bloody battle, lasting nearly three hours, 68 men were killed, 27 Americans and 41 British. Another 109 Americans and 96 British were wounded.

We take a moment today to remember the valor, courage, and tenacity of the officers, common sailors, marines, militia, and landsmen who served on both fleets.

This Week In History:

April 9, 1865 - At Appomattox, Virginia, Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrenders his 28,000 troops to Union General Ulysses S. Grant, effectively ending the American Civil War. Forced to abandon the Confederate capital of Richmond, blocked from joining the surviving Confederate force in North Carolina, and harassed constantly by Union cavalry, Lee had no other option.

April 14 - On this day in 1865, John Wilkes Booth, an actor and Confederate sympathizer, fatally shoots President Abraham Lincoln at a play at Ford's Theater in Washington, D.C. The attack came only five days after Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered his massive army.
