UTRGV is one of 11 organizations nationwide to receive a $5 million federal grant aimed at strengthening the Valley’s manufacturing sector by helping small manufacturers build a skilled workforce, adopt new technologies and expand their operations.

The funding will support EMPOWER-RGV – short for Elevating Manufacturing through AI-Driven Practical-Oriented Workforce Education and Regional Growth in the Rio Grande Valley – an initiative led by the UTRGV Institute for Advanced Manufacturing (IAM) that will provide hands-on training and technical assistance to small manufacturers across the Valley.

🏈 Football, food, culture and some friendly competition 🤠 🧡

In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, UTRGV President Guy Bailey kicked off the first-ever President’s Pan de Campo competition, challenging tailgaters to find out who makes the best “Vaquero” bread.

During UTRGV Football’s Sept. 19 home game, seven contestants fired up their skillets and made their pan de campo fresh at the tailgate. The South Texas staple, also known as “cowboy bread,” is often made from recipes and techniques passed down through generations.

After plenty of taste testing from the panel of judges, Roy Sendejo, a member of Edinburg Mayor Omar Ochoa’s team, took home first place, followed by Sammy Sanchez in second and Johnny Cardenas in third.

“Nothing beats game day in Edinburg with UTRGV, especially when you can share a South Texas tradition like pan de campo with the community, and walking away with a win made it even sweeter!” Ochoa said.
