Medical students at the UTRGV School of Medicine are helping children and teens across the Rio Grande Valley explore careers in health care through RISE, a student-led program offering mentorship and hands-on learning.

Short for Reaching, Inspiring and Supporting Excellence for Youth, RISE has reached more than 150 young people through activities ranging from practicing suturing and exploring ultrasound technology to learning how the human body works.

For Natasha Bell, a fourth-year medical student who helped found the initiative, those experiences are opportunities to help young people imagine their futures.

“RISE started with a simple idea — that one experience can change how a student sees their future,” Bell said. “When students can step into these roles and see themselves in them, it builds confidence and opens doors they may not have imagined before.”

The UTRGV School of Medicine Student-Run Clinic recently brought together learners and community partners for a day of service in partnership with Proyecto Desarrollo Humano (PDH), a community-based organization serving the Rio Grande Valley, UTRGV School of Nursing, the Department of Nutrition & Dietetics and UTRGV American Medical Student Association (AMSA) pre-medical students.

Serving in the colonias offers learners valuable opportunities to gain hands-on experience while supporting underserved communities.

The interprofessional collaboration also strengthens connections among UTRGV programs and community partners.

Throughout September, we’re celebrating Women in Medicine and Science Month by spotlighting women faculty members who are advancing academic medicine, research and education.

Meet Dr. LuBeth Perez, director of Community Health Partnership Programs and assistant professor in the Department of Population Health and Biostatistics at the UTRGV School of Medicine.

Dr. Perez knew from a young age that she wanted to work in medicine. At 15, she began volunteering at her local hospital, an experience that sparked a journey through respiratory therapy, public health, teaching and health science. After years of building her career outside the Rio Grande Valley, she felt called to return home and dedicate her work to improving the health of the community she is proud to call home.

Today, Dr. Perez brings together students, healthcare professionals, community health workers and local organizations to address community-identified needs while preparing the next generation of health professionals. She hopes these experiences inspire students to remain in or return to the Rio Grande Valley and become part of the healthcare workforce our region needs.

Six years ago, Dr. Christine Elizabeth Loftis crossed the stage as a member of the inaugural graduating class of the UTRGV School of Medicine.

This fall, she returns not as a student, but as a physician helping write the next chapter of the institution she helped build. Loftis, a member of the School of Medicine’s historic Class of 2020 and a graduate of a UTRGV-affiliated Internal Medicine residency program, has been named UT Health RGV’s first rheumatologist.

“Returning to the Rio Grande Valley was always the plan,” she said. “This community played a major role in my development, both personally and professionally. I have always hoped to come back and serve the region that gave me so much.”

Throughout September, we’re celebrating Women in Medicine and Science Month by spotlighting women faculty members who are advancing academic medicine, research and education.

Meet Dr. Tara Vierra, division chief of Women and Children’s Health at the UTRGV School of Medicine and a Valley native who was raised in La Feria.

Dr. Vierra knew she wanted to become a pediatrician as early as her freshman year of high school. Her passion for caring for children and advocating for patients who often cannot advocate for themselves has continued throughout her career.

Today, Dr. Vierra combines her passion for pediatrics with her dedication to medical education, mentoring students throughout their training and supporting them as they pursue their goals in medicine. For her, being able to help the next generation of physicians grow from their first year through graduation is one of the most rewarding parts of her work.

The UTRGV Area Health Education Center (AHEC) Scholars Program welcomed its newest class during the first Community Engagement Meeting of the fall semester.

Through the nationally recognized program, students gain interdisciplinary and community-based learning experiences while preparing to serve rural and medically underserved communities. The program also provides opportunities for students to engage directly with the communities they may one day serve.

Mr. Jorge Rodriguez leads the UTRGV AHEC Scholars initiative, with oversight from Dr. LuBeth Pérez, director of Community Health Partnership Programs and UTRGV AHEC program director.

Their leadership supports the program’s continued growth and its focus on developing a culturally responsive health care workforce for South Texas.

Throughout September, we’re celebrating Women in Medicine and Science Month by spotlighting women faculty members who are advancing academic medicine, research and education.

Meet Dr. Seval Coban, assistant professor in the Department of Medical Education at the UTRGV School of Medicine.

Dr. Coban’s journey into science began while working as a student-worker in a biochemistry laboratory. An unexpected opportunity to work in research opened the door to a career that would take her from biochemistry and molecular biology to cancer research and, ultimately, medical education.

Today, Dr. Coban brings that scientific background and the lessons she learned throughout her journey to her work with medical students. She is passionate about helping students understand complex scientific concepts, grow in confidence and develop the foundation they need to become physicians and scientists.
