08/05/2026

For most of her three years at Grossmont College, Shaelen Taylor spent up to three hours each day commuting to and from campus on foot, by trolley and by bus. Her trip from La Mesa began with a 30-minute walk to the nearest trolley station, followed by a trolley ride and a bus to campus.

Despite the long commute, Taylor remained active in classes, campus programs and student organizations, becoming a student leader. Now, she is preparing to transfer to San Diego State University this fall with a $5,000 Opportunity Transfer Scholarship from the Foundation for Grossmont and Cuyamaca Colleges. She plans to study public health with an emphasis in environmental health.

“I didn’t think I’d be able to get this far, and I feel like I really did grow as a person coming into college,” Taylor said. “I had to push myself to believe in myself, but there are people here at Grossmont College who showed me that they believed in me and supported me.”

Taylor found support through MESA, the Math and Science Center, the Career Center, Gizmo’s Kitchen and Veterans Services. MESA helped with transportation and food assistance and provided her first job tutoring math and biology.

“There’s such a strong presence of community here,” Taylor said. “Everywhere I’ve needed help, I’ve found immense support that has helped me find confidence in myself.”

Taylor served as president and Inter-Club Council representative for the Conservation Club and as public information officer and treasurer for the Science Club. Courses in chemistry, biology and microbiology helped Taylor connect environmental issues with community health. She hopes to build a career addressing pollution, health care access and the unequal effects of environmental conditions.

“It feels really special to know that people at Grossmont College are advocating for me, checking in on me and believing in students like me,” Taylor said. “Their support has made me feel like I really can continue my education.”
