🇺🇸 SATURDAY BROTHER SPOTLIGHT | THEODORE ROOSEVELT

Before he led a nation, he was already a Brother. ⚒️

Theodore Roosevelt was raised a Master Mason in Matinecock Lodge No. 806 in Oyster Bay, New York. He would go on to become the 26th President of the United States, but his story offers a lesson that reaches beyond any office or title.

Duty. Leadership. Service. Brotherhood.

Roosevelt once wrote that character, in the long run, is the decisive factor in the life of an individual and of nations.

That lesson remains just as powerful today.

Offices are temporary.
Recognition fades.
Titles pass.

Character remains.

🇺🇸 SATURDAY BROTHER SPOTLIGHT | THEODORE ROOSEVELT

Before he became the 26th President of the United States, before his name became synonymous with courage, determination, and the “strenuous life,” Theodore Roosevelt became a Brother. ⚒️

Roosevelt was initiated into Matinecock Lodge No. 806 in Oyster Bay, New York, in 1901, and remained connected to Freemasonry during his presidency.

What makes his story especially fitting for Freemasonry is the way he viewed character.

Roosevelt believed that a man’s worth was not determined simply by position, wealth, or recognition, but by what he was willing to do with the responsibilities placed before him.

President or citizen.
Famous or unknown.

Inside the Lodge, a Brother meets another Brother on the Level.

More than a century later, Roosevelt’s life still reminds us that titles eventually disappear, offices are surrendered, and monuments weather.

Character is what remains.

BROTHERHOOD IS BUILT BY SHOWING UP. ⚒️

A Lodge is more than a room, a building, or a name on a charter.

It is the Brothers who walk through the doors.

The handshakes. The conversations. The laughter over dinner. The familiar faces returning, and the Brother you haven’t seen in a while taking his seat once again.

THE COMMON GAVEL

Freemasonry teaches us that building a better man is not always about adding something new.

Sometimes, it is about having the courage to remove what no longer belongs.

Pride. Anger. Envy. Resentment. Selfishness. Destructive habits.

Like a craftsman removing the rough and unnecessary portions of a stone, the Common Gavel reminds us to continually work on ourselves, chipping away at the things that keep us from becoming better men, better fathers, better husbands, better Brothers, and better members of our communities.

The goal is not perfection.

The goal is progress.

The question isn’t whether the stone needs work.

The question is whether we’re willing to do it.

🇺🇸 Before he became President, he was already a Brother.

Harry S. Truman is remembered as the 33rd President of the United States, but his journey in Freemasonry began decades before he entered the White House.

Initiated in 1909, Truman remained deeply committed to the Craft. In 1940, his Brethren elected him Grand Master of Masons in Missouri.

His titles would eventually include President and Commander in Chief, but among Freemasons, there was another title that remained simple and enduring:

Brother.

🇺🇸 SATURDAY BROTHER SPOTLIGHT | HARRY S. TRUMAN

History remembers Harry S. Truman as the 33rd President of the United States. The Craft remembers another part of his remarkable life: Brother Truman.

Truman was initiated into Freemasonry in 1909 and remained deeply involved in the fraternity throughout his life. His commitment eventually led his Brethren to elect him Grand Master of Masons in Missouri in 1940, years before he assumed the presidency.

For Truman, Freemasonry was not simply an association attached to a famous name. It was a lifelong commitment that accompanied him through military service, public office, the presidency, and beyond.

President. Soldier. Grand Master. Brother.

His story reminds us that titles may change and offices eventually end, but the principles by which a man chooses to live can remain with him for a lifetime.

🇺🇸 SEPTEMBER STATED MEETING | WE WILL NEVER FORGET

Brothers, our September Stated Meeting will carry special meaning.

As our nation approaches the 25th anniversary of September 11, 2001, Fraternity Lodge No. 1111 will gather in Brotherhood and take time to remember the innocent lives lost, the first responders who ran toward danger, and all those whose lives were forever changed that day.

We invite our Brothers to be present.

Show up. Participate. Do the work.

And don’t come alone. Reach out to a Brother from another Lodge and invite him to join us for an evening of fellowship, remembrance, and Masonic Brotherhood.

Perfection was never the lesson.

The Perfect Ashlar represents something far more attainable, and far more demanding.

To measure ourselves.
To recognize what needs correction. To improve through deliberate work.

Not perfection. Progress.

Because becoming a better man is not the work of a single degree, meeting, or moment.

It is the work of a lifetime.

The work continues.

A Perfect Ashlar is not the symbol of a perfect man.

In Freemasonry, the stone that has been shaped and prepared reminds us of something far more attainable: improvement through work.

The Rough Ashlar represents what is unfinished. The Perfect Ashlar represents what can emerge when knowledge, discipline, experience, and virtue are continually applied.

But there is an important distinction.

A Mason does not suddenly become “finished.”

There will always be another rough edge to address. Another lesson to learn. Another opportunity to practice patience, integrity, charity, or self-control.

The Perfect Ashlar therefore gives us an ideal toward which to labor, not permission to believe we have already arrived.

Measure your actions.
Correct what is out of square.
Keep working.

Because perhaps the greatest evidence of progress is recognizing how much work remains.
