This week’s featured EA intern is our Vice President, Nohemi! Nom had the amazing opportunity to work under the NOAA Center for Atmospheric Sciences and Meteorology (NCAS-M) in the 2018 Experiential Training Summer Program for Rising Sophomores (ETSP) where she was mentored by Dr. Rosa Fitzgerald in the Physics Department and PhD. Students in the Atmospheric Physics Lab at UTEP. Nohemi researched weather parameters which lead local National Weather Stations to issue a tornado watch on the eastside of El Paso on Nov.4th ,2016 and built on historic tornadic data from 1955-1997 to understand the relationship between El Niño/La Niña (ENSO) and tornadoes in the El Paso CWA. She also presented her work in Washington DC at Howard University!

This weeks’s featured EA intern is Jessica Salcido. This summer, she had the opportunity to conduct research through a program called STEMGrow. Jessica worked in Dr.Moody’s plant evolution lab with mentor Liz Stunz on a project regarding Saltcedars. Saltcedars are invasive plant species that thrive in riparian ecosystems, and in El Paso there are cases of saltcedar plots. Since they have an aggressive nature, they have become a possible threat to biodiversity, salt concentrations in soil, and water ( high evapotransporation rate). Therefore, Jessica’s job this summer consisted of a close analysis to see the effects the saltcedar has on our area, done by Transect sampling and soil analysis. The goal is to find a trend and analyze any plant and soil properties regarding high salinity concentrations.

This week’s featured EA intern is Christina. She spent the summer as a Diana Natalico Intern doing research at UTEP. This program offers a unique collaboration with the El Paso community and the University of Texas at El Paso. Christina is working with Dr. Sobin and her team to identify lead exposure around Sunset Heights and Lamar Elementary School. They are testing children’s blood for lead and are using specialized equipment to detect sources of lead to create a mitigation plan.

This weeks’s featured EA intern is Jesus!
He is working as a research assistant for Dr. Eli Greenbaum at the University of Texas at El Paso. Under the Research Initiative for Scientific Enhancement Program (RISE), Jesus has an opportunity to enhance his experience in scientific research under the direction of a faculty member and prepare the transition to graduate school. He is aiding Dr. Greenbaum in the process of genetic barcoding to identify various species of amphibians and reptiles from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Currently, they are focusing on species from Kahuzi-Biega National Park in the DRC. They will present a poster of their findings at the COURI Summer Symposium in August.

Our next featured EA member is Meela! Meela is an REU student conducting research on green roofs at The University of Texas at El Paso. She is currently working under Dr. Vanessa Lougheed, where they have created soil cores with a mini irrigation system designed to simulate green roof bedding and runoff quality. Their research experiment will test runoff water quality in different soils while testing for nutrients such as: nitrogen, phosphorus, dissolved organic carbon, and salinity.

EA President, Samantha Peña, is spending her summer as an REU student doing research in Mystic, Connecticut. The program offers a unique collaboration between the local Mystic aquarium and University of Connecticut at Avery Point. Sam is working with Dr. Catherine Matassa to understand the reason southern New England is experiencing massive Salt Marsh Die off. The students are performing multiple manipulation experiments to identify and understand the causes as well as how to possibly reverse or slow the loss of this critical habitat. We are very proud of our president’s achievements and looking forward to the great changes she’ll make in the future!
