Today we remember Joe Gomez ’70, a proud UTEP alumnus, Engineering Advisory Board member, and loyal supporter of the Miguel A. Loya College of Engineering.

While Joe was not an engineering graduate himself, his impact on the engineering community was undeniable. Through his generosity, encouragement, and unwavering support of UTEP, he helped strengthen opportunities for our students and programs. More than anything, Joe will be remembered for the way he treated people, with warmth, humor, and genuine care.

The Miguel A. Loya College of Engineering is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Shahriar Hossain as Chair of the Department of Computer Science.

A dedicated UTEP faculty member for 13 years, Dr. Hossain transitions from interim leadership to guide the department toward sustainable growth. His vision emphasizes faculty collaboration, strategic partnerships, AI innovation, and preparing students as adaptable leaders and problem-solvers across industries.

This marks an exciting new chapter for Computer Science at UTEP.
