🤝 Two universities. One region. A growing network of AI researchers.

Researchers and students from UTEP’s Miguel A. Loya College of Engineering and Universidad Autónoma de Ciudad Juárez are strengthening connections across the border through the Binational Research Network for Modern AI.

The collaboration brings together expertise in artificial intelligence, mathematics and computing while creating new opportunities for research, mentorship and student exchanges at both institutions.

From exploring emerging AI technologies to building a cross-border co-mentoring network, the partnership is helping prepare the next generation of researchers while expanding what UTEP and UACJ can accomplish together.

Collaboration across borders, advancing research together. 🤝

UTEP Computer Science researchers Dr. Martine Ceberio, Dr. Marcelo Frias, Dr. Vladik Kreinovich and Dr. Christoph Lauter joined UACJ’s Dr. José Manuel Mejía Muñoz, Dr. Boris Jesus Mederos Madrazo and Dr. José David Díaz Román, during the 32nd Semana de Ingeniería to exchange research, discuss ideas and strengthen collaboration between both institutions.

“We believe there are many more opportunities for collaboration between our universities. There is so much room, talent and potential — and, most importantly, these collaborations benefit our students,” said Martine Ceberio, Ph.D., professor of computer science and associate dean for people, culture and environment at Loya Engineering.

This fall’s meeting brought together researchers from both institutions, with plans to continue the exchange at UTEP in the spring and expand the network to include more researchers in the future.

What a Homecoming week! 🧡💙⛏️

We’ve been celebrating our Gold Nugget recipients, Juan Sanchez and Robert “Bobby” Gonzales, and welcoming our alumni back to campus for a week filled with celebration, reconnecting and plenty of Miner pride.

From the Welcome Ceremony and Golden Grads celebration to the Homecoming Pep Rally and Distinguished Alumni Awards Dinner, it has been a special week celebrating our honorees and reconnecting with our Miner community.

The celebration continued this morning at our Loya Engineering Homecoming Gold Nugget and Alumni Breakfast, where we were joined by Loya Engineering alumni, friends and special guest UTEP President Heather Wilson, who shared remarks about the future of mining engineering at UTEP.

And Homecoming isn’t over yet! 🎉 Join us at the Homecoming Pregame Party and then cheer on the UTEP Miners as they take on the Oregon State Beavers.

📣 Loya Engineering Leadership Update
Congratulations to César Carrasco, Ph.D., who has been named interim associate dean for Research, Innovation and Impact, effective Sept. 1!

Carrasco has been a member of the Loya Engineering faculty for 26 years, serving in several academic and leadership roles throughout his career at UTEP.

Carrasco succeeds Eric MacDonald, Ph.D., who recently accepted a faculty position at the University of Florida. We thank Dr. MacDonald for his leadership and contributions to Loya Engineering.
