El Paso proudly hosted the 2026 Student Steel Bridge Competition (SSBC) National Finals at the El Paso Convention Center on May 22–23, bringing together nearly 500 engineering students from 44 universities across North America.
Organized by the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) and the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), this premier competition challenged students to design, fabricate, and construct a 20-foot steel bridge—testing innovation, precision, teamwork and real-world engineering decision-making.

We are proud of the Miguel A. Loya College of Engineering and our UTEP community for hosting an event that showcases experiential learning at its highest level and highlights the future of structural engineering.

🚀 Internships Start Here: Vianey Martinez

What started as an internship became a defining moment for Vianey Martinez, a senior computer science student in the Miguel A. Loya College of Engineering.

During Summer 2025, Martinez joined Microsoft as an Explore Intern, where she worked with the Azure Core team to solve real-world engineering challenges and gain hands-on experience in software development. The experience strengthened her technical skills, expanded her professional network and confirmed her passion for the field.

In Summer 2026, Martinez has returned to Microsoft as a Software Engineer Intern and is now exploring opportunities in artificial intelligence research as she prepares for the next step in her career.

At Loya Engineering, internships are more than professional experiences — they are opportunities for students to discover their potential, build confidence and launch successful careers.

Today we remember Joe Gomez ’70, a proud UTEP alumnus, Engineering Advisory Board member, and loyal supporter of the Miguel A. Loya College of Engineering.

While Joe was not an engineering graduate himself, his impact on the engineering community was undeniable. Through his generosity, encouragement, and unwavering support of UTEP, he helped strengthen opportunities for our students and programs. More than anything, Joe will be remembered for the way he treated people, with warmth, humor, and genuine care.

The hooding ceremony recognizes the dedication, research, and academic achievement required to complete an advanced degree. It also symbolizes a graduate’s transition into a community of scholars, innovators, and leaders prepared to make an impact in industry, research, and beyond.
