Soup weather is here! 🍲

You don’t need a complicated recipe to make a warm, satisfying meal. Start with an onion and broth, then add a protein, a starch, vegetables and your favorite seasonings. It’s a great way to use what you already have in the pantry, freezer or fridge.

NDSU Extension’s *7 Steps to Creating a Soup* guide gives you ingredient amounts and ideas to help you put your own pot together:

🍂 Before you put your garden to bed, take a look at what should stay—and what should go!

Fall cleanup doesn’t mean leaving every garden bed bare. NDSU Extension shares these tips for wrapping up the growing season:

🥕 **Remove spent vegetable plants.** Once plants finish producing, pull them out. Healthy plant material can be composted, but keep diseased plants out of the compost pile to help reduce future disease problems.

🌻 **Leave perennial stems and seedheads until spring.** Seedheads provide food for birds, and standing stems offer overwintering habitat for native bees.

🌾 **Keep ornamental grasses standing.** They add winter interest and help trap snow that insulates plants.

🍁 **Manage leaves on the lawn.** Light amounts can be mulched with your mower. Rake up thick layers that could mat down and smother the grass; those leaves can be composted.

✂️ **Save routine tree and shrub pruning for late winter or early spring.** Fall pruning can leave pruning wounds vulnerable to drying over winter.

📝 **Make notes for next year.** Write down favorite varieties, what grew well, and what you’d change while this season is still fresh in your mind.

What’s still on your fall garden checklist? 👇

☀️ Protecting your health today can reduce risks years from now.

Agricultural workers may be exposed to sunlight, dust, pesticides and other hazards during routine work. Wear sun-protective clothing, apply sunscreen, follow pesticide labels and use the personal protective equipment specified for each product and task.

Wash exposed skin and clothing promptly, and keep contaminated work clothing separate from household laundry.

Small protective steps, repeated every day, can make a lasting difference.

⚠️ Grain bins, silos, manure pits and other agricultural confined spaces can become deadly within seconds.

Never enter a grain bin alone. Before entry, shut down and lock out all unloading and conveying equipment. Use the proper safety equipment, have a trained observer present and make sure there is a rescue plan.

If someone becomes trapped in grain, call 911 immediately. Do not enter the bin and risk becoming another victim.

No load of grain and no unfinished job is worth a life.

👨‍🌾 Safe habits are one of the most valuable things we can pass from one generation to the next.

Before starting a job, take a few minutes to explain the task, identify possible hazards and make sure everyone knows what to do if something goes wrong. Avoid assuming that someone understands a piece of equipment simply because they have been around it before.

Encourage everyone on the farm to stop, think and act:

🛑 STOP: What could go wrong?
🤔 THINK: Do I understand the task and have the right tools?
✅ ACT: Follow the proper procedures and make the task safe.

Hello, coffee lovers! ☕🍂
Fall is the perfect excuse to cozy up with your favorite cup. Whether you take it black, add a splash of cream, or go all in on the pumpkin spice, NDSU Extension has some interesting facts about what’s in your coffee.

What’s your go-to order?

It's the first day of fall! Which means... coffee season is here in full force.

Many studies have explored the health benefits and risks of coffee. Although coffee in large amounts may have some negative effects, try strategies to reduce these outcomes. Drink coffee in moderation (3 to 5 cups per day). Consume a diet rich in calcium to prevent osteoporosis, and drink filtered coffee to avoid coffee’s lipid-raising agents.

Also, be aware that coffee beverages vary widely in calorie, caffeine and sugar content. Many coffee shops provide nutritional information online or in printed materials.
