Hello writers! Welcome! The books in this class are either free and unlimited downloads or Inclusive Access. The main goal of this class is to bring you more deeply into your own poetry writing process and to help you create some poems you are proud of. Lowkey, low pressure, generative poetry writing every week. One deadline per week. You don’t have to consider yourself “a poet” now, but by the end of this class you will!

In addition to writing your own poetry, we will be reading poems by a group of contemporary poets---brilliant, varied voices in the poetry world. We’ll be examining craft, form, voice, style and considering the choices the poets made while writing these poems. We’ll be reading a singular well-received book of poetry by Eugenia Leigh titled Bianca and exploring how that book is assembled and enacted. Ultimately, you can use their examples as jumping off points for possibilities in your own work. We will be practicing techniques and experimenting with form, occasion, and various poetic techniques and experiments! You never know what you might write!

Every dollar donated through to the English scholarship for Access & Opportunity will be matched up to $5000 with a donor gift to our English department scholarship endowment.

The English scholarship for Access & Opportunity supports students like Karla Maravilla, a graduate of Granger High School and double major in English Language & Literature and Professional & Creative Writing at CWU. Karla was a research fellow in the McNair Postbaccalaureate Achievement program and won an outstanding undergraduate presentation award at SOURCE. She is now a PhD student of English at the University of Notre Dame, researching Latinx experiences at the intersection of literature, health, education, and sustainability. Karla is also a poet, whose work explores illness, myth, and sacrifice in the experiences of migrant farmworkers across the United States, with poems published in The Acentos Review, Palette Poetry, and Poetry Northwest and a poetry manuscript “La Casa Negra” that was a national semifinalist for the 2022 Andrés Montoya Poetry Prize.

I hope you will join me in helping our English majors reach their educational and professional goals. Please also share our project page link with your network of friends, colleagues, and alumni who support the work of the English Department.

Thank you for making our giving project a success! - Dr. Christopher Schedler, Department Chair
