Student Professional Development Center The SPDC empowers students and alumni with the skills and critical know-how needed to achieve academic, professional, and career related goals.

Innovate:
Located in the heart of Elon’s vibrant campus, our state-of-the art facility includes interview and seminar rooms, a recruiter lounge, classroom space, staff offices and the latest video conferencing technology. Collaborate:
Elon’s network of employers, alumni, parents and friends help connect students to premier job and internship opportunities. We host active on-campus recruitment ev

ens throughout the academic year. We welcome top employers to participate our fall and spring Job and Internship Expos, present workshops, and conduct on-campus interviews. We have active partnerships with Credit Suisse, EY, PwC, The U.S. State Department, Teach for America, GE Capital, Vanguard and many more. Educate:
Our goal is to empower students to define and achieve their professional aspirations. Within one year of graduation, nearly 90% of new alumni are employed, enrolled in graduate or professional school, working for a service organization such as the Peace Corps, Teach for America, or completing a post-graduate fellowship experience. Dedicated Staff:
We utilize industry-leading resources to help students and alumni find success. Career Fellows collaborate with Student Life to lead professional planning initiatives within the on-campus residential neighborhoods and other key offices such as The Multicultural Center and The Center for Leadership.

✨12/2: Ceasefire Negotiations: Shooting for Peace in Ukraine and Gaza hosted by SIS Professor Anthony Wanis-St. John

Wars often get worse before they get resolved. But if no side can escalate violence to victory, a ceasefire may eventually be imposed or negotiated. These are always hard to achieve while easy to reverse. We will discuss how such negotiations work, who conducts them, and what can happen in the aftermath. We will also discuss the factors that are likely to lead to success. The possibilities of a ceasefire in Ukraine and Gaza can be compared to many previous wars, but we have to keep top of mind the need to do them better.

✨12/3: Nationalism and War hosted by SIS Professor Keith Darden

Prof. Darden delves into the relationship between nationalism and war—why states go to war, how they fight and mobilize their populations, and how nationalism can both complicate and contribute to efforts to end armed conflicts. With a particular focus on the Russian-Ukrainian war, but also attention to the recent conflicts and settlements of conflicts in the South Caucasus and the Middle East.

Pete Nani '88 is the CEO of ZIPS Car Wash. He shares what he sees as critical to business today, especially in the unique and quickly growing world of car washes:

🔹 On the future:
The car wash industry is growing fast, with more sites and subscription users than ever. The focus now is on standing out through great teams, strong service, and consistent customer satisfaction.

🔹 On key skills:
Critical thinking and emotional intelligence are essential. In any service industry, relationships—not transactions—create long-term success.

🔹 On rewards and challenges:
The most rewarding part has been seeing team members grow and succeed. Decades in the industry have taught me that resilience and people-first leadership drive lasting results.

🔹 On Elon experiences:
Elon strengthened my critical thinking and leadership skills—lessons from both the classroom and campus community that still guide me today.

🔹 On career advice:
"Put people first!" When you value your team, they value your customers. That’s the foundation of success.

Sara Krauss '05 is the Director of School Partnerships for the University of Maryland Baltimore County. She shared insights into a career in education in this day and age:

🔹 On the future:
Education is evolving rapidly. AI is becoming a valuable tool when used responsibly, and alternative pathways—like online programs and flexible training—are making teaching more accessible and diverse. What we’ll always need most are dedicated, high-quality teachers who stay in the profession.

🔹 On key skills:
Authenticity, adaptability, and collaboration are essential. Great educators keep learning, listen deeply, and bring creativity and flexibility to every day—because no two days are ever the same.

🔹 On rewards and challenges:
The most rewarding part is hearing from former students years later and seeing the lasting impact of your work. The challenge is that those results often take time—but they’re always worth it.

🔹 On Elon experiences:
Elon taught me the power of service and community. From Elon Volunteers! to Alternative Spring Break, those experiences showed me how to work with people, not for them—and shaped my purpose in education today.

🔹 On career advice:
“Each day, you have the ability to impact someone’s life trajectory—make sure it’s a positive one."

Aarti Rishi '15 currently works in Brand Marketing at GrubHub and shared key insights into what has helped her advance in her career as well as some key Elon experiences:

🔹 On the future:
The food and tech industries will keep evolving as people’s dining habits and relationship with AI continue to change. Staying close to social conversations and ready to adapt will be key to keeping up with shifting trends.

🔹 On key skills:
Success takes a balance of creativity and analytics. Great marketers think outside the box to differentiate their brand—then use data and insights to turn those ideas into campaigns that truly connect with consumers.

🔹 On career challenges & rewards:
Working in fast-changing industries can be tough, but it keeps you sharp and adaptable. The best reward? Seeing your work come to life—whether it’s a TV spot, live activation, or scrappy campaign that makes a real-world impact.

🔹 On Elon experiences:
Studying abroad in London and working at a creative agency there built global perspective and confidence, while serving as Design Editor for The Pendulum strengthened leadership and creativity.

🔹 On career advice:
Be a proactive learner—try new things, and always advocate for your own growth.

Check this out Monday and Wednesday this week!

A Career Chat is a 30-minute virtual conversation open to any students who want to learn, ask questions, and get career-ready whether they’re preparing for post-grad life or pursuing their next internship. While my main audience is seniors exploring full-time roles, the topics are designed to be valuable and engaging for all years and majors.
Each session will be hosted via Microsoft Teams every Monday and Wednesday evening from 7:00-7:30PM.
Here’s how each session will flow:

0-10 min: Introduction to my company, Vi-Leon
10-20 min: Discussion on that evening’s topic
20-30 min: Open Q+A

For returning attendees who have already heard the company overview, they can hop in at 7:10PM to go straight into the discussion and Q+A portion!

David Duncan '19 is a lawyer specializing in Mergers and Acquisitions. Here's what he finds valuable for those entering the legal profession:

🔹 On the future:
AI is transforming how lawyers serve clients. Junior attorneys will increasingly oversee AI-driven drafting and review tools, allowing them to take on more substantive legal work earlier in their careers. The real differentiator won’t be who uses AI—but who uses it responsibly to deliver faster, smarter, and more comprehensive advice.

🔹 On key skills:
Attention to detail, responsiveness, and problem-solving are essential. Great lawyers anticipate risks and stay committed to delivering excellent service to clients and colleagues alike.

🔹 On Elon experiences:
An undergraduate research project funded by the Leadership Prize built key skills in framing complex questions, synthesizing information, and presenting clear recommendations—skills that directly mirror the demands of M&A legal practice today.

🔹 On career advice:
Don’t confuse “I haven’t learned this yet” with “I’m not capable of learning this.” Law can feel overwhelming at first, but patience, curiosity, and persistence help you grow into the work.
