Louisa Malchodi ‘23 recently wrapped up her year as an English Teaching Assistant in Taiwan, and we couldn’t be prouder. The world needs Fulbrighters now more than ever!

“My time as an English Teaching Assistant with The Fulbright Program fostered persistent creativity and relentless curiosity. Every day I needed to think on my feet, adapt to classroom needs, and build my facilitation expertise. I had the privilege of working with over 400 students in 4th through 9th grade. I was constantly seeking exciting ideas to engage easily distracted students and to facilitate English learning and cross-cultural sharing across my 20 classes. My creativity was vital to crafting diverse lesson topics. Some of my favorites range from Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs to Taylor Swift. (Thank you for that one, Elon Psychology. Our “Psychology” week of class was certainly a fun one.)

I was challenged every day inside and outside the classroom by the language barrier, but my co-teachers helped me connect with students of all English abilities. Thanks to them, many resources from Fulbright Taiwan, lots of Google Translate, and help from kind and patient locals, I learned to navigate life in Taiwan with accelerating joy and curiosity each day. I learned more Mandarin phrases and more about Taiwanese culture as I wandered from my school’s hallways to train stations all over the country.

My time in Taiwan taught me to seek cross-cultural connection and to explore unknown and sometimes “scary” experiences that are well-worth the risk. My year was rewarding and unforgettable, and uniquely prepared me to think about what comes next. I am immensely grateful. Thank you Foundation for Scholarly Exchange (Fulbright Taiwan) and thank you, Taiwan❤️.”
