This week we are excited to highlight Courtney Dickens C’27 who is completing the Nathan Schnaper Intern Program in Translational Cancer Research at the University of Maryland School of Medicine! 🌟💡

Courtney is grateful for her coaches, professors, and mentors and explains 📣

“The tight knit community at the Mount has provided me with guidance from upperclassmen and has allowed me to build close relationships with peers inside and outside of the classroom. I know that the bonds I have built here will stay with me even after I have graduated! Additionally, the experiences I have gained throughout my undergraduate research in the Lombardi lab have prepared me for opportunities like this one and I am extremely excited to represent myself as a student from Mount St. Mary’s this summer!”

On campus, Courtney is the captain of the women’s D1 cross country and track and field team, Secretary of ASBMB (American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology), Secretary of Health Professions, Member of Lombardi Research Lab, Tri Beta Biology Honors Society, and Gamma Sigma Epsilon Chemistry Honors Society. 🗻

Please join us in congratulating John Owens C’20 on his acceptance to medical school at Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore (Gemelli) in Rome! While at the Mount, John majored in biochemistry with a minor in mathematics. His time as a student was marked by academic rigor and unique opportunities, including a transformative study abroad experience in Ireland during the fall of 2019. With support from dedicated faculty, John was able to complete key coursework remotely—such as Physical Chemistry I—allowing him to stay on track academically while embracing this international experience.

Here’s a bit from him: “Studying abroad in Ireland was a defining moment in my journey, pushing me to adapt to a new culture and imagine life beyond the United States. That experience prepared me for what lies ahead in Italy, where I will take on not only medical school but also a new language and culture. I’m especially excited to learn Italian as part of my curriculum at Gemelli and connect with my heritage. I am incredibly grateful to the Mount’s faculty for making this path possible—Dr. McCauslin for supporting my academic flexibility, Dr. Miles for teaching physical chemistry at a distance, Dr. Ward for leading the study abroad cohort and teaching pathophysiology, Dr. Kreke for guiding me through organic chemistry and the medical school application process, and Dr. Dye for mentoring my honors research and teaching immunology. The Mount truly prepared me to take this next step.”

Meet Jack Freemont C’26, a biochemistry major with a minor in music! 🌟

During his time at the Mount, Jack was involved in various clubs and organizations such as Choir, Club Tennis, Health Professions club, ASMNB, and ACS. Jack thanks the Mount for his academic and personal growth. Through the small class sizes, Jack was able to form close relationships with professor. Many of the professors became mentors for Jack who have invested in his education and personal development. 💡📓

Jack will begin his new chapter at Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine and looks forward to applying the lessons learned from the Mount. We wish you the best of luck Jack and are very excited for you! 🎉

Join us in congratulating Johnathon Johnson C’20! Johnathon recently received his Ph D. from the Department of Chemistry at the University of Florida! 🎉

Johnathon was a Chemistry major at the Mount and during his time as an undergraduate student he was part of the Track & Field and Cross-Country team, a part of Gamma Sigma Epsilon Honor Society, and conducted research with Dr. Garth Patterson and Dr. Isaac Mills. 🔬📓

Johnathon thanks the Mount and the impact it had on his success as a person and student. The Mount helped shaped Johnathon’s need for community and the importance of establishing a strong support system. His next step is applying for positions within academia and the semiconductor industry; we are so proud of you Johnathon! 🏔💡
