ty; to explore ideas; and to develop patterns of life-long learning; they equip the student with vital links to the past and future, with the skills and insights necessary to succeed in a rapidly changing society, and with the learning essential to effective citizenship. In this spirit, the college is committed to providing high-quality general education and elective-course experiences for all undergraduate students at the university and academically challenging programs of study for its majors and minors, both undergraduate and graduate.

ESU’s 22nd annual "MASTER-IT!" program is a wrap!
For five days, fifteen young Kansas women interacted with female professionals in STEM careers and took part in hands-on projects from those areas of study.
Students investigated the topics of DNA, bees, food chemistry, zoo keeping, fish, forensic science, nuclear power, wildlife management, rocketry, medicine, nursing, mathematics, teaching and programming. The group also spent time at ESU’s Prophet Aquatic and Research and Outreach Center facility investigating water ecology, fishing, canoeing, hiking and eating at an outdoor cookout.
Drs. Qiang Shi and Daphne Mayes directed the program this year. Dr. Melissa Bailey also helped make the camp a success. Two ESU Mathematics Education students, Julia Whitaker and Cahrin Pinkston, served as counselors for the week along with Biology student, Nadia Valdez-Saravia.

Congratulations, Tre Karagianis!
Tre is taking a summer course through the Institute for Field Research, which will be training him not only in basic archaeological skills but also specifically in conservation archaeology. He has a particular interest in the ancient world, and the dig is at Stobi, in Macedonia; this is a site that once was a major city in the Roman Empire and has archaeological data that dates from the Greek era all the way through Christianization and the Middle Ages.
