The Appalachian Regional Commission recently used the Beehive Network as a case study in their report titled: "Making Connections for Stronger Businesses and Resilient Communities."

And here are some key takeaways:

— "Over the two years of the ARC grant in 2017–2019, the Beehive Network improved 312 businesses and facilitated the creation of 34 new businesses. Later, in 2022 alone, the network served 140 small businesses and 85 early entrepreneurs, creating 12 new businesses, and engaging well over 100 students."

— "Members of the Innovation Beehive Network emphasize that the key to their success has been an honest and deep collaboration in which no member of the Beehive has an individual agenda or vies for more credit, media coverage, or funding than the others."

— "There must be no wrong door to connect with support, and doors must be accessible both geographically as well as culturally. For example, in the case of the Beehive, if a resident did not feel comfortable going to a university for supports, the public library was accessible and provided both equipment and more basic classes for emerging entrepreneurs."

Northwest Pennsylvania has a wealth of knowledge capital within its universities. While the universities have consistently served the region through work with companies and community organizations, few opportunities have been available for individuals and small businesses. The NWPA Beehive Network remedies this by providing services to entrepreneurs and small businesses with minimal barriers and no fee. The Network is a collaboration of all regional universities and the Erie County Library System. Each provides a unique set of services that complement each other to fill gaps that an entrepreneur may have in their skill set. Meanwhile, undergraduate students are provided with extraordinary work experiences that have a real impact on their community. The Network has been recognized as a unique and effective model for inter-university collaboration as well as an exceptional career-building experience for students. This presentation will explain the Innovation Beehive Network, its vision, challenges, impact, and future.
