Welcome to Monday Pop Culture Mania, our new weekly Hurst Day post where we talk about your favorite film and music genres!

This week, we’re tuning our radios to jazz! Jazz has its roots in African American communities in the late 19th century, particularly in New Orleans, Louisiana. While it has no one inspiration or genre of origin, early jazz was heavily influenced by blues and ragtime. The style is characterized by call and response vocals, improvisation, and swing and blue notes. Famous jazz musicians include Louis Armstrong, Nat King Cole, Duke Ellington, and Billie Holiday.
