What makes a flock stick together? The key is staying in perfect balance, research shows. 🦆

UO physicist John Toner has studied flocking for decades. Beyond swooping chimney swifts or swarms of ants, flocking theory also helps scientists understand other kinds of collective movement, like how cancer cells or bacteria divide and spread.

“I'm doing this work because I'm following my curiosity,” he said. “But inevitably, as often happens in science, things you study just out of curiosity wind up having all kinds of applications.”

UO-led research team to advance quantum networking ⚛️🔬

In June, UO physics professor and director of the Oregon Center for Optical, Molecular and Quantum Science Brian Smith's team was awarded a two-year, $4 million grant from the National Science Foundation to develop a prototype quantum network on the UO campus. By relying on the unusual properties of quantum physics, quantum networks aim to link multiple quantum sensors or computers to perform tasks believed to be infeasible with their traditional counterparts.

“We have our work cut out for us, but our research will transform communications, sensors and computers,” said Smith, director of the Oregon Center for Optical, Molecular and Quantum Science. “I anticipate quantum science and engineering will progress considerably faster than the Internet did from 1969 to the present day.”

A track coach. A waffle iron. An idea that helped change how the world runs. At Oregon, challenging convention has always been part of the story.

Today, that instinct is opening new possibilities for human health. Ducks are studying how the body performs and recovers through the Wu Tsai Human Performance Alliance. At the Ballmer Institute, they’re preparing a new kind of provider through the nation’s first undergraduate degree in child behavioral health.

Different challenges. The same Oregon impulse: see what could be better, then help build it.
