Gutenberg College http://www.gutenberg.edu/ Gutenberg College is an accredited, four-year, Christian Great Books college in Eugene, Oregon. Gutenberg College offers a B.A.

We read the Great Books in a discussion-based format in order to help students grow in their understanding of God, the world, and themselves. in Liberal Arts. Through this degree program, students develop a broad skill set around critical thinking, writing, and communication that makes them sustainable in the 21st-century marketplace. These skills are sought after because they are highly transferrable and do not become obsolete with technology. Students learn how to learn because they learn how to think, rather than what to think.

In a cultural landscape dominated by institutions, what is a community? Is it built of rules and procedures? Friendship? Common interests? What is the texture of a community, and how can we tell if we are part of one?

Our next young philosophers discussion is October 27, from 6-7:30 p.m. PDT. Join us as we explore the nature of community.

Young Philosophers is an online discussion for high-school-aged students. You can register or find out more at gutenberg.edu/yp.

We at Gutenberg are pleased to announce our plans for this year’s Winter Institute! The topics for the last two Institutes have been Hope and Love, so this year we have decided to address the subject of Faith.

Join us January 23, 2026 for a day of learning, food, and community! During Winter Institute, we spend a day exploring a particular topic of Christian life through lectures, discussions of selected readings, and art.

This year, we will read about the life of faith (and imperfection) led by Abraham. We will examine the heroes of faith from Hebrews 11 and consider what sort of faith they had. We will explore the insights of past thinkers, including Søren Kierkegaard and John Calvin. We will also reflect on faith through the visual art of guest artist Marianne Scrivner.

Who trims the trees and fills the potholes at Gutenberg College? The president and the board of governors, obviously! (They do plumbing, painting, and sprinkler system repair too.) Servant leaders are rare in higher education, and we are grateful to have so many of them here. Our community benefits every day from their dedication and humility.

Want to join the Gutenberg community and work or study alongside these fantastic people?

1. We're always looking for volunteers! From administrative tasks to building maintenance, there's always something to do, and we would love to have your help.

2. Gutenberg offers a chance to study and discuss the great works of Western Civilization as part of a four-year mentorship program designed to help you form a mature understanding of the world and your own place in it. (It's disguised as an undergrad so we can give you a B.A. for your hard work.)

3. Gutenberg College is primarily donor funded. Your gift helps us offer every student who wants to come to Gutenberg the tuition that they can afford, without the burden of excessive debt. You can become a regular donor, or specify a one-time gift for a particular portion of the program.

Come visit! Preview Days is a two-day immersive tour of Gutenberg College. Visiting students join meals with the student body, take classes with the faculty, and have the option to stay overnight in the Residence Program. "I had a fixed purpose when I put to sea.
As I sat in the boat with my band of men,
I meant to perform to the uttermost
what your people wanted or perish in the attempt,
in the fiend's clutches. And I shall fulfill that purpose,
prove myself with a proud deed
or meet my death here in the mead-hall."

In Medieval Scandinavia, where monsters and dragons roamed the wilds, we find the great Beowulf. Through acts of cunning, bravery, and brute strength, Beowulf responds to many difficult circumstances. What is it that makes a hero? Is it what one accomplishes? What one becomes? What one intends? In this webinar, we will raise this and other pressing questions while practicing the art of discussion together.

Spend the year with C.S. Lewis' Space Trilogy!

Through Chapterhouse, Gutenberg College shares the enjoyment and camaraderie of reading and discussing thought-provoking books. We invite anyone who is interested to join us in person for one Monday a month to read through the Space Trilogy. These novels are more than just stories of travel between planets. Lewis weaves into them explorations of good and evil, the psychology of faith, and the logical consequences of opposing worldviews. The depth of ideas in the stories makes them ideal to discuss in community, and we look forward to having these discussions.

The reading schedule, meeting times, and location can all be found at gutenberg.edu/chapterhouse.

**please note that there is no remote option for attendance, and discussions will not be recorded.

What do we mean when we say something is true? Is truth a quality of something? An abstraction? How and on what basis do we believe things are true?

Join Dr. Eliot Grasso next Monday, September 14, at 6 p.m. PST to explore the nature of truth and how we know what we know.
