UO Psychology Department News and information about the Department of Psychology at the University of Oregon.

The Psychology Department functions "as a whole" rather than as a set of insulated areas. There are no rigid boundaries between traditional sub-fields (biological, cognitive, developmental, social, personality, and clinical psychology). Instead, numerous intellectual communities cross-cut these sub-fields, drawing students and faculty together in collaborative research and allowing for the sharing of expertise and state-of-the-art technologies (e.g., Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging).

For many summers now, UO Psych has been the location of "Compassion Week" -- a small conference of international researchers who study factors related to prosocial decision making and behavior. The conference was inspired by the vast and continuing body of research by Emerit Prof. Paul Slovic (second from the left in photo). Many Compassion Week attendees are Prof. Slovic's former students and current collaborators. Pictured here from this summer are UO Psych PhD alum Dr. Ellen Peters (now a Knight Professor in UO's School of Journalism and Communication); Emerit Prof. Paul Slovic; Dr. Enrico Rubaltelli from the University of Padua in Italy, who first came to Eugene to be a visiting scholar with Prof. Slovic many years ago and who has regularly returned to visit since; and UO Psych PhD alum Dr. Stephan Dickert, a faculty member at the University of Applied Science of Neu-Ulm in Germany.

Just like every summer since 2007, UO Psychology was part of SAIL (Student Academy to Inspire Learning)! SAIL is UO's summer program designed to help talented Oregon high school students from demographics that are underrepresented in higher education learn more about what it means to be a UO undergrad and how they can attend. This year, Psychology and Linguistics faculty contributed two weeks of programming (demos, activities, labs, data collection): one week for students who stayed overnight in the campus dorms and the other week for students commuting to campus each day. A whole lotta learning went on!!
