Employers in health care, biotech, education, and research want people who can explain complex ideas clearly and earn the trust of a general audience. At the University of Oregon School of Journalism and Communication, students build those skills through hands-on science communication work.

UO students can add our science communication minor, collaborate with faculty on research and documentary projects, and apply for small grants from the Center for Science Communication Research (SCR) to lead research, creative work, or events of their own. In one recent course, students partnered with UO researchers and many saw their stories published.

SCR also pairs faculty who study how people understand science with faculty who produce documentaries, audio stories, and photojournalism, so students graduate with both research insight and production skills.

SOJC students joined a working sports communication team at the Prefontaine Classic and the World Athletics U20 Championships this summer.

SOJC Teaching Professor Kelli Matthews developed the new eight-week sports communication practicum with TrackTown USA. Students wrote press releases, shot photos and video, and handled social coverage. Much of their work was published on TrackTown USA's social channels and the World Athletics website, so everyone left with high-quality portfolio pieces.

Public relations major Zara Linneman photographed the U20 Championships using World Athletics camera gear, with a professional mentor reviewing her work after each session. “"It was so much fun," she said.

The practicum returns in summer 2027 and is open to all University of Oregon students. Read the full story by third-year public relations major Angelina Handris: https://journalism.uoregon.edu/news/sports-communication-class
