Can international, undocumented, refugee, and asylee GEs participate in a strike? Yes! ❤️🔥✊
International GEs have the same legal rights as domestic GEs, including the right to join and participate fully in a labor union, demand access to all rights and benefits of our contract, have union representation in disciplinary meetings, file grievances, and participate in a strike.
It is ILLEGAL for an employer to retaliate against a striking worker. Retaliation can include threatening to take away benefits, threatening termination, or threatening to affect visa status.
Your student visas should not be affected by participating in a strike so long as you remain a student. Dismissing a student for participating in protected labor activity is illegal retaliation.
If UO pursued legal action against an individual for striking, GTFF and AFT would draw on our extensive legal aid resources to support you.
UO wants you scared, but your union has your back. Contact your steward or send us a DM if you have any questions, and we’ll find you an answer or find someone who can!
When we fight together, we win together!
