For Members Only

For Members Only FMO is the voice of the Black community here at Northwestern. Today, that place is known as the Black House.

Providing major programming throughout the year as well as partaking in co-sponsored events, we serve to provide all Black students on campus with a college experience that is tailored to them. For Members Only was founded in 1968 in
accordance with the May 3-4th agreement
between the University and the Black students
after 110 of 120 Black students stormed the
Bursar’s Office. They demanded an eq

ual
proportion of blacks enrolled to the population
of the US, the African American Studies
program, and a place to house themselves. The name stems from the fact that Black golfers
were unable to practice with the NU team
because Evanston Golf Club was “For Members
Only,” which was a euphemism for “Whites
Only.” A group of students stole the sign proclaiming “For Members Only” and took it as
the name for the group which would speak for
the Black students on campus.
