McCormick’s Jonathan Rivnay has been named the National Laureate in Physical Sciences and Engineering for the Blavatnik Award for Young Scientists, earning a $250,000 prize for his work in soft bioelectronics and “living pharmacy” devices that could enable new approaches to personalized medicine. He is just the second Northwestern professor to earn a Blavatnik Award.

Professors Nathan Gianneschi and Omar Farha are exploring a new approach to protecting people from nerve agents and toxic pesticides: melanin-inspired nanoparticles that capture harmful chemicals and break them down.

Activated by water, the material could eventually be added to masks, gloves, uniforms, and other protective gear used by farmers, soldiers, and others at risk of exposure.
