Professor Vadim Backman will lead a new $30 million National Science Foundation center at Northwestern focused on decoding how cells store and use information beyond DNA itself. The Center for Genome Intelligence Engineering (GENIE) will bring together researchers from multiple disciplines to study how the genome's three-dimensional architecture influences health, aging, injury, and disease.

New work from Professors Jennifer Dunn and Giuseppe Buscarnera, and collaborators examines everything from recovering valuable materials from mining wastewater to finding new uses for mine waste. Northwestern Engineering’s Michael Rubenstein has been selected for the inaugural cohort of the Office of Naval Research’s Chief of Naval Research (CNR) Fellows program.

Launched this year, the program brings academic researchers into the naval science and technology enterprise, giving them the opportunity to apply their expertise to critical U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps challenges. The CNR fellowship also aims to build stronger connections between the US Department of the Navy and the academic community.

Rubenstein is among 12 winners chosen from more than 180 nominations from approximately 70 academic institutions across the United States.

Professor Lisa Volpatti has received an NSF CAREER Award, the foundation’s most prestigious honor for early-career faculty. Her project will investigate how nanoparticle surface components behave in complex biological environments, helping researchers design nanomedicines with more predictable behavior in the body.

The result is CiteGeist a cloud-based, AI-powered research management platform, powered by NVIDIA's Nemotron 3, designed to help researchers discover, organize, annotate, cite, and verify scientific literature while preserving the context and source transparency that research demands.

Launched in July, CiteGeist helps users uncover connections across sources, synthesize information more efficiently, and generate source-grounded insights. Developed with support from NVIDIA and Amazon Web Services (AWS), the platform reflects Kline's broader work on trustworthy, auditable AI for high-stakes environments.

bloXroute, a blockchain solution start-up with Northwestern roots, reached a significant milestone on July 15 with its acquisition by FalconX, a digital asset prime brokerage. BloXroute was co-founded by Northwestern Engineering’s Aleksandar Kuzmanovic, Uri Klarman (PhD ’19, MS ’17), and business partner Eyal Markovich in 2017.

In a news release, FalconX stated that combining bloXroute's networking infrastructure with FalconX's institutional trading platform and global market infrastructure will accelerate the development of next-generation on-chain capital markets.

Research led by Northwestern Engineering’s Vadim Backman is helping explain why.
