This morning, our very own Joel Matherly, Director of the USI Veteran, Military and Family Resource Center, had the opportunity to speak with Mike Blake on 14 NEWS’ Midday with Mike.

The two discussed The Wall That Heals, a traveling, three-quarter scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., coming to campus October 29 through November 1.

Keep an eye out for Joel’s segment, airing later this summer!

USI has been part of Becky Diamond’s story for decades. As she’s watched the University grow, she’s grown right alongside it. 🙌

“I started working here when I was 15. It was my first job, back when this campus looked completely different. I left for a while, but in 1993, I came back by accident while visiting campus with my son. I was between jobs, walked into the dining room, and ended up getting hired again. I never expected to still be here 32 years later, especially starting out making pizzas and subs. Now I am the General Manager of Sodexo.

Over time, I worked my way up through different roles. My favorite was operations because I could be out with people more. My current role, Director of Dining Services, now has a lot of finances, which is not my favorite, but I applied because I felt like I needed to do it for my team.

USI has always felt like home. I grew up right down the road and have watched this campus grow from cornfields into what it is today. I cannot imagine being anywhere else.

One of my favorite parts of the job is Orientation. Families come in overwhelmed, especially parents, and you can see the relief when you help them understand everything. Knowing we can make them feel confident sending their students here means a lot.

COVID was one of the biggest challenges. Staffing, safety and just keeping things running were difficult, but we made it through. More recently, it has been the rising cost of food and trying to keep things affordable.

Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my granddaughter, camping and being outside gardening or working in my yard. I call it dirt therapy.

Looking ahead, I want to keep learning and eventually help prepare someone to take my place here. Personally, I hope to have a big garden one day and spend more time doing the things I love.”

Sam Preston, Director of Public Safety, has considered himself a member of the USI community even before he was officially a Screaming Eagle.

“I’ve kind of been connected to this place longer than I’ve actually worked here. For 26 years, I was with the Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office, and USI was part of my patrol district. I worked events out here all the time. Commencement, basketball games, things like that. So by the time I officially came here, it already felt familiar.

I always thought this could be a good transition someday. Law enforcement is a young person’s game, and while I loved my career and would do it all over again, I knew I wanted something that still let me serve people. This felt like the same kind of work, just in a different environment.

When I first came on as Assistant Director of Public Safety, it just fit. I got to use the same skills, the same mindset, still focusing on helping others. Now, as Director of Public Safety, every day is different. There’s no such thing as a routine day here. You might be working with students, faculty, visitors or families all in the same day.

Some of the most memorable moments have been the big ones. Getting to help organize the celebration when our Women’s Softball Team won a national championship was special. Being part of events like an Inauguration and Solarpalooza, those stand out too. But honestly, even the difficult days stick with you. When something hard happens on campus, seeing people come together and put others first, that says a lot about this place.

What’s kept me here is that sense of community. Public Safety touches everyone on campus. From the President to a first-year student, we’re here for everyone. We get the chance every day to make people feel safe and supported.

At the end of the day, that’s what matters to me. Being part of something where you can serve others, make a difference and know that what you’re doing matters. That’s what keeps me coming back.”

FYI to those on and off campus this summer: University Parkway south ramps from campus (entering and exiting eastbound Lloyd Expressway) will be closed after today, Tuesday, May 26, for paving work. The closure is expected to last around 30 days.
