Archaeology at the University of Evansville

Archaeology at the University of Evansville The Department of Archaeology offers challenging learning experiences through an interdisciplinary approach.

UE's undergraduate archaeology and anthropology programs offer excavation and research opportunities in the US and abroad, internships at museums and other cultural institutions, and study abroad opportunities. Students are required to take classes in a range of fields outside of their major with faculty members who provide collaborative and supportive interaction. The department also engages its

students in purposeful experiences such as fieldwork within the United States and abroad. Why choose the University of Evansville’s archaeology program?

Learn from professional archaeologists who are actively engaged in research on Mediterranean sites, who are dedicated to undergraduate instruction, and who have been awarded recognition for their teaching at a college, university, and national level.

Excavate at Tin City on UE’s campus, at Jezreel in Israel, and at locations in the US and abroad.

Gain real-world experience by interning at museums and other historic sites.

Enjoy the opportunity to study abroad at Harlaxton College, UE’s campus in Grantham, England, or at other locations around the world. Additionally, UE’s close-knit department is one of few Mediterranean archaeology programs in the region and unusual in that it grants a BA in archaeology. The archaeology major concentrates on ancient Mediterranean, Near East, and Western Europe.

Our last for awhile highlights another great local internship opportunity with the Reitz Home Museum.

Below are a few photos of Madison W.'s experience this past semester, including being in the museum's Drawing Room, which was not only her favorite room in the house, but also a room that she spent a few weeks researching its hand painted oil on canvas ceiling for an article she wrote for the museum's newsletter. In the second photo, she is in the intern's office cataloging new donations.

Madison also provided tours to the public and cataloged new and existing items in the museum's digital database. This process typically involved searching through the museum's library and archive in addition to conducting research on various topics, such as art history.

Another great internship experience, this time with the Evansville Wartime Museum!

Kyle M., a junior majoring in archaeology, had such an amazing time helping out at the Evansville Wartime Museum. Making exhibits was his favorite part, and he got to make two this year: one on the Asiatic-Pacific Theater of WWII, and the other on Verna Fairchild, a retired flight nurse who achieved the rank of Major General (and also attended UE!). He noted that all of the experiences he had at the museum were very positive, and he was glad they gave him the opportunity to help add to the museum!

We have another amazing internship experience to highlight for this !

This semester, archaeology and art double-major Ainsley K. had the pleasure of interning at the Evansville Museum of Arts, History & Science for the Virginia G. Schroeder Curator of Art, Cheyenne Miller. This experience fanned the flames of her interest in a career path in museums and was a great learning and networking opportunity. Plus, it was a lot of fun!

Our final Senior shoutout for the Class of 2026 is Grace. G.

Grace hails from Nicollet, Minnesota. She will graduate with a BA in archaeology and a second BA in classical studies (language and literature specialization).

Some of her favorite experiences from her time at UE include participating in the Tin City Archaeological Project, studying at Harlaxton College, tutoring Latin, talking and working with friends and professors in Sampson and during lunch in the lab, writing for and editing Crescent Magazine, performing with the UE Choral Society, and leading Bible studies for Aces Catholic.

Grace is incredibly thankful to have been a part of such an enthusiastic, collaborative, and supportive community that has pushed her to be better and helped her achieve her goals. Learning alongside and from such dedicated (and hilarious) people has helped her grow in so many ways. The archaeology and anthropology department is truly a family!

This summer, Grace will participate in her second season at the Mt. Lykaion Excavation and Survey Project (Greece), where she will be taking charge of the ceramics in the lab. In the fall she will begin graduate studies in classical archaeology at Florida State University in preparation for a combined career in archaeology and teaching.

Please join us in congratulating Grace and wishing her the best of luck!

On Saturday, archaeology and anthropology students toured the Jasper City Mill, the West Baden Springs Hotel, and the French Lick Springs Hotel on our annual field trip to sites in southern Indiana! Highlight included a stop at Tell City Pretzels, German translation opportunities in the Enlow City Cemetery, and a great tour of West Baden Springs Hotel with Dan F.

We would like to celebrate Zoe S. this week in our Senior Class of 2026!

Zoe is from Mandeville, Louisiana and majors in Archaeology. One of her favorite experiences at UE includes her semester at Harlaxton. While there, she was able to travel all over the UK, Paris, and Athens, becoming close with people in her major who she often travelled with. One of her most memorable trips was visiting Stonehenge and Bath with some of the other archaeology majors. She also enjoyed working on Tin City while attending UE.

Zoe noted she was grateful for how close knit and supportive the Archaeology department is. She felt that the professors not only supported her education, but also made her more prepared for “the real world” by giving her both hands-on experience through courses like Tin City and the Technical skills classes, and also by giving her a more realistic expectation for career paths post-graduation.

Zoe's immediate plans are to return home and work for her Dad’s company before moving up to Kentucky with her boyfriend, and finding work there. Her long-term goal is to either find a job at a museum or one that allows her to incorporate her artistic skills in a field related to archaeology or history.

Please join us in congratulating Zoe and wishing her the best of luck in the future!
