On Monday, April 1, the TCNJ Department of Design and Creative Technology (DCT) will welcome Thomas Dolby, the Taylor A. Hanex Professor of Music for New Media at the Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University. You are cordially invited to join us! The afternoon events will include Professor Dolby's presentation on music in film and media, and a reception. All are welcome to attend! This visit has been organized to celebrate the 20 year anniversary of the founding of the IMM program and our continued development as DCT, fostering interdisciplinary innovation across the arts, design, and technology.

For over three decades, Thomas Dolby Robertson has crafted a career that blends music and technology. An early star on MTV, his intelligent videos and songs like "She Blinded Me With Science" and "Hyperactive" became huge hits, standing the test of time. His keyboard and production work put him in the studio and on stage with the likes of David Bowie, Stevie Wonder, Roger Waters, and Joni Mitchell, garnering numerous awards and five Grammy nominations.

Recognizing the opportunities for digital distribution of music via the Internet and later through wireless phones, Thomas started Beatnik Inc. in the early 1990s, where he co-authored the audio layer of Java, created the first interactive music sites on the Web, and licensed technology to Nokia, Samsung, and Panasonic, to co-develop the embedded software synthesis ‘polyphonic’ ringtone engine that has shipped in billions of handheld devices.

For 12 years, Thomas served as Musical Director of the world-famous TED Conference. More recently he has returned to the stage, taking his transmedia ‘Invisible Lighthouse Tour’ around the US and Europe. He has created original music for feature films produced by George Lucas, Steven Spielberg, and Ken Russell; he has appeared with The Muppets, and on numerous TV shows from Soul Train to The Late Show.

Join author and TCNJ faculty member Teresa Nakra for a discussion about her newly released book, "Constructing Music." The book presents a new method for teaching music fundamentals that foregrounds creative coding practices and builds upon the computing skills that today’s students already possess. Dr. Nakra will discuss the ideas behind "Constructing Music," share software examples, and raise ideas about the role of music as a proto-form of AI and its impacts on emotion, wellness, and creativity.
