TODAY!!!!!

In remembrance of Robert Franz (1968-2025), the Healing through Music and Dance (HTMD) Program of North Star Community Foundation (NSCF) and the University of Alaska Fairbanks Department of Music will present a tribute concert on Sunday, October 4, 2026 at 4pm at the UAF Charles Davis Concert Hall in Fairbanks, AK.

The program will feature HTMD Harmonica Man Mike Stevens, Marc Brown and other musicians who wish to honor Robert. Details will be posted here and on our website as they become available. If interested in performing on the concert (singers welcome), please contact Terese Kaptur at mailto: [email protected]

Robert's commitment to bringing the music to the people is the inspiration for this HTMD program. Terese Kaptur, currently HTMD Program Director and retired Fairbanks Summer Arts Festival Director, brought Robert to AK to lead the financially struggling FSAF orchestra program and serve as Music Director.

Not only did he turn the economics around and mend fences with local musicians, he then developed the string intensive, and collaboratively, the opera intensive, partnered with the Composing in the Wilderness program, and all of the outreach programs. Mike Stevens was with the FSAF American Roots division when he performed with the FSAF orchestra. Robert gave young string players and singers an opportunity to perform with an orchestra for the first time.

TONIGHT!!!!!!

Join us Saturday, October 3 at 7:00pm in the Charles W. Davis Concert Hall for an evening of new and multimedia music presented by Wildshore New Music. The ensemble's thirteenth season foregrounds Indigenous and Alaskan voices through interdisciplinary collaboration, improvisational practice, and chamber music as a site of cultural dialogue. Their mainstage program, a collaboration with Alaskan singer-songwriters, musicians, and filmmakers, presents a multidisciplinary work in three parts:

The first part centers on Ahtna Athabascan and Iñupiaq songwriter Quinn Christopherson, winner of NPR's 2019 Tiny Desk Contest. Christopherson reimagines his songs for chamber ensemble and co-creates a new work with Wild Shore's ensemble.

The second part pairs live music with experimental films by Alaskan filmmaker Michael Walsh, including Braking Breath (35mm silent color film). Wild Shore has commissioned composer Matt Evan to reimagine his work Still Live to accompany Braking Breath.

The final part brings together all of Wild Shore's artists for the early stages of a larger work-in-progress, combining film, composition, and improvisation. It features a birch-wood violin made by Christopherson's great-grandfather, Frank Hobson, known as "The Eskimo Violin Maker."

Performed by the Wild Shore Ensemble:
Katie Cox, flute
Andie Tanning, violin
Eleonore Oppenheim, bass
Sean Dowgray, percussion

A wonderful evening of music, ideas, and discovery! 🎻✨

Thank you to everyone who joined us for this cello lecture recital and shared in the journey behind the music. It was a joy to explore the repertoire, discuss the stories and ideas that shape each piece, and bring these works to life through performance. Thank you Dr. Strawser and the cello studio!!

Grateful for the support, thoughtful questions, and enthusiastic audience. Here’s to many more opportunities to connect through music! 🎶
