Now that it is getting cold, are you already thinking about your spring and summer plans? If you choose to complete an internship, be sure to consider URSA's Internship Funding!

This past summer, Kristal Bozeman, Psychology and Justice student, received an Internship Award to serve as the Mentor Coordinator for the Fairbanks Veterans Court.

When asked about her experience, Kristal shared "This experience greatly impacted my educational interests and goals. I am minoring in Justice, and restorative justice caught my attention early on in my classes. Participating with the court has helped me better understand the inner workings of restorative justice programs, which has been invaluable to my education.

"My advice [to fellow students] would be to pick something you’re interested in exploring, or already passionate about, and just go for it. The URSA Internship Award is a great opportunity to dive into something and gain new experiences."

Undergraduate students with confirmed volunteer, unpaid or minimally paid internships off-campus are invited to apply for funding. We offer up to $3,000 of support for opportunities in the Fall or Spring, and up to $6,000 for the Summer. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis.

URSA offers Travel Award funding on a rolling basis all year long! Do you have an opportunity to participate in an event this year? Whether you will be presenting at a conference, entering in a competition, performing for an audience, or pursuing an immersive program- let us help you get there!

T. Womack received URSA Travel Funding to attend and perform at this year's Valdez Theater Conference! When asked about their experience, T. shared: "Spending time with fellow creatives even outside of performances was valuable and meaningful. It was an honor to be a part of this process. I received useful and supportive feedback from all walks of life in attendance. Spending a week concentrating on skill building was a very valuable experience and being surrounded by others who share the passion in this discipline was a blessing I will always be grateful for."

This award was mentored by Carrie Baker, Professor of Theater & Film and Associate Dean of the College of Liberal Arts. Visit the URSA Travel Award page for more information: https://www.uaf.edu/ursa/funding/travel_awards/index.php

Sierra Lloyd, Interdisciplinary Studies: Marine Chemistry, received a Spring 2023 Project Award, under the mentorship of Dr. Ana Aguilar-Islas, to analyze aluminum and manganese concentrations in water samples from the Gulf of Alaska to help better patterns of iron content in the water.

Sierra said about her experience, "My URSA project is the jumping-off point to begin a multi-year project, which will serve as a senior capstone project and potentially even span into a master's degree. It has also helped me cement my place as a recurring member of the Northern Gulf of Alaska Long Term Ecological Research Project. URSA is an amazing experience, and a great way to learn the science you want to do in a way that you simply cannot achieve in regular courses."

Shaylise Sylvester, Psychology, received a 2023 Spring Student Project Award, under the mentorship of Dr. Jen Peterson, to research the correlation between art materials (synthetic v. natural) and the impact on cortisol hormone levels after the process of art-making. To investigate the impact of art medium on stress reduction, Shaylise held two workshops where participant vitals and samples were taking before and after working with clay.

When asked about her project, she said: "Doing a research project helps cement the curriculum you have learned. Research can also help you choose a career or graduate program. I would encourage any student to apply for a URSA grant if they are looking to expand their education by doing a project they are interested in."

I applied for and received Fall 2023 URSA Project Award funding to extract DNA from ancient spruce samples found on the North Slope under the mentorship of Dr. Diana Wolf.

My interests include traveling, hiking, baking, and hanging out with my two dogs, my cat, and my two bunnies! I've been in Alaska for over a year, and it has been an amazing journey so far! Feel free to contact me to learn more about the URSA Student Experience ([email protected])!

When asked about her experience, she shared "These awards have afforded me the opportunity to complete research in my field, work closely with professionals, attend conferences, and present my research. On top of this, URSA allowed me to cut back on my weekly work hours to focus on my research. To anyone considering applying for an URSA grant: absolutely do it, the skills you gain from working with a mentor are invaluable."

Ethan Stone completed a Summer 2023 Internship Award to support their work as a Husbandry Internship with the Alaska Zoo in Anchorage. Ethan is an interdisciplinary student focusing on One Health Perspectives (the interconnected relationship of animal health, human health, and the health of our environment) and strives to be a Wildlife Veterinarian in the future.

When asked about his experience, Ethan shared:
"Over the course of my three month internship, I accumulated just over four hundred hours of animal care experience. Veterinary Medicine School applicants are required to have a certain amount of animal care experience to have their application considered. This internship provided me with a foundation of husbandry knowledge that I plan to build on in the coming years. I was able to work with over thirty species of animals in a short period of time, and consider my time spent at the Zoo to be priceless... I strongly recommend that every eligible undergraduate should apply for an URSA Internship Award. The application process is easy and the benefits will truly make a difference in your experience."

Undergraduate students with confirmed volunteer, unpaid or minimally paid internships with organizations external to UAF are invited to apply for funding. We offer up to $3,000 of support for opportunities in the Fall or Spring, and up to $6,000 for the Summer. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis. Contact us today to learn more!

URSA's Student Belonging and Community Awards are now open for applications through September 10th!

A strong sense of belonging has a significant impact on the student experience. Students who feel like they belong on campus are also more likely to use support resources like academic advising and financial aid. Belonging can also lead to academic success and motivation, self-efficacy, a greater sense of self-worth, and overall mental well-being.

This RFP welcomes projects focused on cultivating a culture of respect, connection, belonging, and community for undergraduate students at UAF and UAF-affiliated campuses. Priority will be given to proposals that align with UAF-wide initiatives for improving the experience for undergraduate students, promoting student success, and fostering a sense of belonging and community while advocating for fair treatment of students.

This opportunity is open to faculty, staff, researchers, graduate and undergraduate students from all disciplines and all UAF campuses. Awards fund up to $5,000- contact us today if you have any questions.

08/16/2023

URSA's Community-Engaged Learning (CEL) Award is now open for applications through September 10th! This year URSA has increased CEL award funding from $500 to $5000 in recognition of the effort needed to build meaningful and impactful community relationships.

During the 2021-2022 school year, the University of Alaska Fairbanks Opera Workshop program received CEL funding to complete an outreach opportunity with a collection of Musical Theater and Operetta pieces for local Elementary, Middle, and High Schools. where support for local music programs are being drastically reduced.

"URSA has helped me reach goals through their funding and ongoing support. We were able to reach out into a community of younger students, and a community of educators, in an effort to make connections and to share our art. That is always the goal of us as performers and to have had that chance is in itself, wonderful." - Grace Farrell
