As much as we hate to admit it, winter is just around the corner. Plan ahead, get your ice cleats before the first snow, and practice your penguin walk!

University of Alaska Fairbanks employees and students can obtain one free pair of ice cleats by visiting us at 825 Alumni Drive between 8 AM and 5 PM, Monday through Friday (except for campus-wide closure days). Bring your UA ID and the boots or shoes you plan to wear most this winter.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Earlier this month, our team chose to wear varying shades of purple to show support for victims of domestic violence. For victims of domestic violence in Alaska, you can find help.

The national DV hotline number is (800) 799-7233. You can also find resources through the Alaska Network on Domestic Violence & Sexual Assault (ANDVSA) at (907) 586-3650. The Alaska Department of Public Safety also has resources on their website (links in comments).

October 10th is World Mental Health Day. In support of employee and student mental health, EHSRM would like to share some free training opportunities with you (see comments for links):

October 10th: International SOS is hosting an expert panel to examine emotional support challenges and employer Duty of Care for workers.

At your own pace: Through October 31st, the Center for Health, Work & Environment at UC Denver is offering free access to their course, "Su***de Prevention in the Workplace" with promo code PREVENTION2023.

Some buildings are still recognizable such as Signer's Hall (with the attached water tower and Alert System- removed at a later date to make way for Gruening) on the left, Constitution Hall in the background, and the Campus Circle in the center while others were cleared to make room for the campus we know today, such as the power plant where Rasmuson Library now stands and the campus housing where Fine Arts now resides.

Transportation in sub-arctic conditions can sometimes be problematic. Looking at the eclectic collection of now classic cars (rear wheel drive, and lacking ABS, snow tires, and other safety features would have been more challenging to navigate the winter road conditions. Given the "improvised" appearance of the parking spaces- it was likely that parking on campus was at your own risk at that time.

Earlier this month, EHSRM all wore green to show support for those who are or have ever struggled with their mental health. If you’re wondering what mental health has to do with EHSRM, check this out:

~ ”Burned out people will keep burning up the planet.” (Check out the article linked in the comments!)

~ Poor mental health can lead to safety mistakes.

~ Poor mental health is a risk to organizations. Lost productivity, turnover, and lack of engagement costs U.S. organizations billions of dollars each year.

~ Psychosocial risk management has a greater impact on worker well-being than professional mental health assistance, wellness education, and peer networks. There’s a push for the United States to adopt laws similar to Australia, where psychosocial risks are now part of occupational health and safety regulations.

Reporting light or light pole problems is fast and easy! All you have to do is scan the QR code sticker located on the pole. Doing so will open the default email client on your phone or tablet and fill out an email that gets sent to FS Dispatch. If for some reason your phone can’t scan the code (sometimes they get faded or damaged), you can always fill out a regular EWORF request or call Dispatch directly. Please be sure to reference the ID # located on the light pole.
