Last week, FXUA Faculty and Staff actively participated in a 90-minute workshop hosted by the Curriculum Development and Instructional Design Department, focusing on effective assessments for student learning. The workshop introduced the assessment cycle, emphasizing how its four phases—teach, measure, reflect, plan, and improve—aid students in monitoring their progress and achieving learning goals. The participants were engaged in practical exercises on designing effective assessments and explored examples of both summative and formative assessments. Additionally, the workshop provided insights into using effective assessment tools within Canvas, FXUA’s learning management system.

We take pride in our educators' continuous learning to provide the best practices for our students!

: Meet Rasha Taha Al Hawamdeh, a Business Administration major at FXUA. Here’s her story of why she chose FXUA:

Being an international student at FXUA for the second year elevated my educational, intellectual skills, and standards. The unique small setting and professional team enhanced our leadership skills and helped us to adapt a scientific process in critical thinking and problem-solving strategies. The well-designed courses created competent and challenging classes that flavored the learning process. I believe the diverse and intimate setting lessened the homesickness feeling of being far away from our loved ones. FXUA spares no effort to remove all obstacles to prepare students for local and international markets armed with universal technical standards.

Meet FXUA's IT team! 👨‍💻

This is Jeff and Vladi, two members of FXUA's on-ground IT team and the team behind the implementation of FXUA's new online and hybrid degree programs. They have also been invaluable in helping our students and faculty get acquainted with our systems, troubleshoot, and so much more! They are one of our best resources and also work closely with our FXUA Tigers who require accessibility services.

We're so grateful for all they do, and they're one of our proudest assets! ✨

Hi, tigers! My name is Krisztian Mazo! 👋

I grew up in Montgomery County, Maryland, and attended high school at Thomas Wootton High School in Rockville, MD. After graduating in 2013, I attended Montgomery College and received an Associate's Degree in Business Administration. After graduating from Montgomery College, I went to the University of Maryland. While at the University of Maryland, I became an intern at the Executive Office of the President. After receiving my Bachelor's in Business Administration, I moved to Baltimore, Maryland, and became a procurement specialist for the United States District Court for the District of Maryland. In 2020 I was brought on to the same team I interned for at the President's Executive Office. I am currently a Financial Management Analyst but am looking to get into more of a contracting or procurement position.

I joined Fairfax University of America to pursue an MBA in Business Analytics, which would help me advance my career at work. Working directly with various IT program managers, I can use the knowledge I will gain with this degree to help my team make better business decisions while saving resources and time. FXUA was my first choice because of its flexible schedules and accommodating curriculum. The data analytics courses combined with the various ethics and managerial courses are excellent resources for my career at work.

I'm proud to share that I will be graduating from FXUA in the Fall semester of 2023, but I know that the knowledge and relationships I gained here will last forever. ✨

Hi Tigers! 🐯 I am Zahin, a graduate student at FXUA. I’m currently doing my masters in project management, and I come from an engineering background. I completed my bachelor’s in computer science and engineering in Bangladesh. After getting my bachelor’s, I worked at an NGO in Bangladesh as an IT Associate to gain some experience in the professional field. I have worked there for four years, developed my skills, and learned much about the corporate world.

After four years, I knew I wanted to continue furthering my academic career to have more opportunities available. FXUA offered me the Presidential Scholarship, which covered my tuition. They also provided a graduation program in Project Management with a very well-designed course outline, which was exactly the program I was looking for, so I began my degree in the Fall of 2022.

Soon after joining the campus, I took advantage of the campus employment options and began working as an IT desktop support and admin assistant.

Now, I’m in my second semester following my dreams and working as a student employee. My team is wonderful and has been incredibly supportive, and I feel blessed to be a part of the FXUA family.

I am always willing to work hard, and I challenge myself to learn something new every day. At FXUA, I hope to build a path that will open more doors for me and lead me toward my goals - and I feel I’ve found the perfect place to nurture those dreams!

A note from FXUA's President, Dr. Alwani:

A few months ago, Fairfax University of America (FXUA) was presented with a challenge, our accreditor, Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools (ACICS), which has accredited our institution since 2008, lost its recognition from the U.S. Department of Education in August 2022. As a result, we are obtaining new accreditation with a new accrediting body. In the meantime, FXUA is still accredited and has provisional approval to participate in the Title IV program from the U.S. Department of Education until February 2024. We plan to achieve new accreditation by February 2024 and will not accept new students in the interim.

While unexpected, this challenge came as an incredible opportunity. It allowed our institution to fast-track a dream of ours from the very beginning - creating an online curriculum and providing hybrid options to both our domestic and international students.

From its inception, FXUA has aspired to be an institution that prepares students for today's workforce. We set out to redefine higher education by creating programs that allow our students to choose the design and direction of their studies. Our goal was simple, to create a curriculum that could keep pace with the latest developments both within and outside the classroom.

On the heels of the COVID pandemic and as we all gradually redefine our new normal, now more than ever, students are looking for flexibility and options. And I'm proud to share that this year, we officially rolled out our first online classes, and we are working diligently behind the scenes to prepare for future accreditation and ensure that we can continue to deliver on our promise - providing our students with a custom student-centered learning experience needed to prepare for today's workforce.

Meet Dr. Zelalem Chala, FXUA’s Program Chair of the School of Business!

Dr. Chala holds a PhD in Economics from Virginia Polytechnic and State University and a MS in Agricultural Economics from Oklahoma State University. He also recently earned a MS degree in Data Analytics from Southern New Hampshire University.

He has over 20 years of expertise in economic policy research, project management, and business plan development. Since 2016, he held the position of Assistant Professor in the School of Business at FXUA, teaching BA and MBA courses in business analytics, business statistics, international finance, operations management, microeconomics, macroeconomics, and introductory statistics. He has more than ten years of experience in teaching online courses using Moodle, Blackboard, Canvas, and D2L Learning Management System and technologies.

Dr. Chala has published a book and articles on economic growth, export promotion, and environmental economics. Currently, he has ongoing research that is assessing the contribution of currency devaluation in narrowing down the negative trade balance in .

As a Program Chair at FXUA, Dr. Chala is responsible for managing the teaching-learning processes, developing the curriculum, recruiting and evaluating faculty, and recruiting, registering, and advising students to successfully achieve their studies. He has developed new programs of Bachelor of Science in business administration (BSBA), Management Information System (BSMIS), Master of Business Administration (MBA), and Master of Science in Management Information Systems (MSMIS).

Dr. Chala embodies everything that FXUA stands for and believes in, and we couldn’t be prouder to have him in the Tiger family! 🐯
