The Basics: Alpha Omicron Pi has 178 collegiate chapters throughout the United States and Canada. Our international philanthropy supports arthritis and juvenile arthritis research. We have raised nearly $1 million in grants for these causes. Our color is cardinal red and our flower is the jacqueminot rose. Our jewel is the ruby and our symbols are the rose and the sheaf of wheat. Our mascot is the panda. For more specific information about the Gamma Alpha Chapter, please visit: http://www.gmualphaomicronpi.org/ Our Philanthropy: Alpha Omicron Pi’s national philanthropy is Arthritis Research and the American Juvenile Arthritis Organization. In order to support causes the Gamma Alpha chapter at George Mason University holds two large philanthropy events a year. In the Fall semester during parents weekend we hold a large BBQ that we call Smoke-Out Arthritis, where friends and family of AOII get together to learn about our philanthropy while socializing and getting to know the chapter. In the Spring semester Gamma Alpha partners with the Washington Nationals baseball team, and the Mid-Atlantic Arthritis Foundation during the annual Strike-Out Arthritis game. Sisters pre-sell tickets, and work a special booth during the game to raise awareness and help with fundraising for the Arthritis Foundation. Gamma Alpha is proud to pioneering this event and partnerships with a Major Sports team, serving as a model for other AOII chapters across the country in creating similar events. The Gamma Alpha chapter also participates in other campus organizations fundraisers and philanthropy events, as well as around the community. Sisters have helped with multiple organizations in the Fairfax community including; the Humane Society, FACET’s, DC food Kitchen, and the Georgetown NICU hospital. In Fall 2012 sisters participated in the National End Women’s Cancer 5k in Washington DC, and the National Arthritis Walk on the Mall event.
