The Volgenau School of Engineering at George Mason University

Happy first day of the fall semester Patriots! Good luck in all of your classes 💚💛 We welcome back students virtually and in-person today, but no matter the mode of instruction, the education is just as great.

If you're on campus, you'll notice that the campus looks a bit different this fall. Please remember to wear your masks, social distance, wash your hands, and follow all of the protocols that are in place to help keep you safe.

Please also remember to follow these safety precautions when you are OFF campus so that you don't get sick and unknowingly bring the virus onto campus. Stay safe Patriots! #MaskonNation #SafeReturnMason https://www2.gmu.edu/news/587411

🎉Congratulations, y'all who have been accepted to a VSE Graduate program! If this is your first year of studying abroad, know that #MasonNation is here for you.

After finishing my first graduate year at GMU, I have realized that keeping balance in life is crucial for my well-being and my performance. There are so many ways to relieve anxiety and stay focused, and for me it can be as simple as: taking a walk 🏃‍♀️, enjoying the sunset 🌆, or making my favorite home meal 🍲…

During this unprecedented time, it is very important to stay safe, stay informed, and most importantly stay positive. You guys will do great!

👋👋 Welcome (back) to the fall semester, whether you are studying virtually or face-to-face, in the United States or abroad! There have been several changes in the past few weeks regarding International Student Policy, so first thing’s first: let's make sure you have important guidance governing your visa and legal status in the United States.

I highly recommend you to make use of the virtual advising session to meet directly with an OIPS Advisor for any questions regarding your visa status.

The information here is the most updated available: https://oips.gmu.edu/coronavirus/

Gradstravaganza: Graduate Student Welcome
Friday, August 21, 2020, 9:00am – 4:00pm

All new and continuing Mason graduate students are invited to Gradstravaganza, Mason’s annual graduate student welcome event! Gradstravaganza has moved online this year, but will be just as spectacular! Join fellow Mason grad students for a keynote address, mini-workshops highlighting strategies for success in graduate school, a panel discussion on diversity, equity and inclusion, special sessions for Graduate Assistants (GRAs, GTAs, and GPAs), opportunities to meet and connect with fellow Mason graduate students, and a chance to get your FREE Mason Grad Student t-shirt! Brought to you by Graduate Student Life, the Office of the Provost, the Stearns Center for Teaching and Learning, and the Graduate and Professional Student Association (GAPSA).

Featuring Two Plenary Sessions:

9:00-9:50am: Opening Session and Welcome
For the first time, Gradstravaganza will feature a keynote address. In her talk, “How to Stay on Track, Meet Your Deadlines & Have a Life While in Graduate School,” Dr. Fatimah Williams, CEO & Founder of Beyond the Tenure Track, will share strategies for setting goals and managing your student, family, work and other responsibilities. Ten graduate student attendees will be randomly selected to receive a free copy of Dr. Williams’ Professional Pathways Planner! Sign up for the Gradstravaganza Opening Session and Welcome: http://secure-web.cisco.com/1iXtg37LgMlMTHGBtndVH1OTLlpXI9ij9sAy2beuzzkWUg-EmjgJc44QEif1u02CTxfgNtSr8U1L0mFNS65DexuC3NBt20KMlE3z4np0pbAlNnjKxz3zmBTvIOEXHlm1_r-M6-wFpZsOIREaWYxJL_2NfAtjBJqf3IOX0CbpBuMStG5SDfhLaae158KHJeOQZis26rujDLaYofbfGmsPUf_ULetbCSoBO1DPKa9uYSdeKJ_r6F5er-4pN_GhMmoPXL6FD2hB8phy4_xuWMyXBVfRSEWI4jYTejp5FtOVpxaUNx1b25kYl_nwJMl0vzYfsCDx8tIMp1xAz6N6RnAxH0frhG6TBITf0gOcipFPhSvyHKzd2yEbboGTJMWDuWlph4nR8iG9lMPtQ9fJ4oSAO5sJG9QRKfs8tCcyN4oNp4FkkzN2sPNTTdX6ITcpdVQCGu-VhZmkMMDqgy_meyNt3Aw/http%3A%2F%2Fcglink.me%2Fr748037

1:15-2:15pm: Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at Mason: Through the Eyes of Graduate Students
Mason rightfully takes pride in claiming its status as Virginia’s largest and most diverse public university. However, what does that look like in terms of the graduate student experience? We invite all members of the Mason graduate student community to join us for this conversation about diversity, equity, and inclusion at Mason through the unique perspective of our graduate students. Moderated by Dr. Van Bailey, Assistant Dean and Director of Diversity, Inclusion, and Multicultural Education, a panel of Mason graduate students from a range of backgrounds and identities will address navigating graduate school, finding community, mentoring, self-care, the current climate for racial justice, and more. Register for the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion panel discussion: http://secure-web.cisco.com/1WhdOSVqcbNR9SLZcspY25ZbppRe9FGA_EaNSqiFNjdgmCVeosLwrFgQ_lmBriqEtXL0mZleL0bfXx7H16IQNrTYgD98fwN6ymXDrbZOQJ0PMvEP9FFXYQJlM9AMep4MoIorUb0RtS5LxAi3w8mGWBnGm5EfAZE-2egvcSf5IY-Yuy9TKVGxp9LTt0lwAbZd84iAz2rhjaybcLLCAx0EkVGzro2tsajhlb_CsRrmbSc0fT4ZVExYCQx4gX4SgwFIXStG-rb22tpsGS5lF4_B4AfJ8LAKXTaJXxZCYf6B4rBIInoRbit3BlLQFWWjEp44fQ8vRLhg7hCxCIHmr5Ql9girxSIiCr_p6l9hdBHSCb4Kn5NOrAZ2fGV9V-6rUwF8ymsyocHBAGnugGnjAUJgjhmZlinDS6d6EO9VuVxv4kwzy3MUCSErpqwzQ5wE8SIboZdznLJ0UiVCOEc2vbriD_w/http%3A%2F%2Fcglink.me%2Fr743595

Title: Collective Dynamics and Control of Natural and Engineered Systems

Derek Paley
University of Maryland

Abstract:
This talk will describe Professor Paley’s work in collective behavior of natural and engineered systems. Professor Paley’s interest in this topic started in the late 90’s, while working as a Metron analyst on Bayesian estimation for acoustic signal processing, when he was given the opportunity to study the distributed optimization of an underwater vehicle team. His curiosity led him to Bluefin Robotics, where he implemented and tested guidance, navigation, and control algorithms for autonomous underwater vehicles. Professor Paley went on to graduate school, where he studied cooperative control of collective motion for ocean sampling with autonomous vehicles. Many of these topics remain central to his current research at the University of Maryland, where he and his students study the dynamics and control of mobile sensor networks and bioinspired and aerial robotics. Some recent work focuses on data-driven approaches to quantify and predict the collective motion of people, which has applications in micromobility and epidemiology.
