Summer vibes ☀️ 🕶️ at George Mason University’s Fairfax, Virginia campus…

The campus, on 677 wooded acres, is just 20 miles from downtown Washington, D.C.. It is home to most of our undergraduate student population, with more than 6,000 students living in 40 residence halls on campus during the academic year.

The Fairfax campus is also home to the George Mason University - Costello College of Business – one of the largest business schools in Virginia and in the country.

Summer is a special time at George Mason University. Our students enjoy a plethora of trees, gardens, and other natural spaces, along with outdoor recreational activities that include pickleball, beach volleyball, classic and ebike rentals, walking, and running. And, of course, it’s a great time to order a Starship delivery from one of our retail dining partners while catching up on your summer reading in a quiet shade garden.

"What we are seeing in West Asia is a masterclass in intentional eco-system building…,” says Patrick Soleymani, George Mason University - Costello College of Business associate dean for outreach and strategic engagement.

Entrepreneurship is rapidly reshaping the economic landscape of West Asia, particularly in Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Qatar where governments are actively transitioning away from oil dependence toward diversified, innovation-driven economies. At the center of this transformation is Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, a strategic framework designed to expand private sector participation, empower small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), and position the Kingdom for sustainable, long-term growth. The Vision 2030 goals include increasing SME contribution to GDP from 20% to 35%.

The entrepreneurial momentum unfolding across West Asia mirrors a broader global reality that institutions like the Donald G. Costello College of Business at George Mason University have long embraced: entrepreneurship is not simply a business activity — it is a vehicle for economic and social transformation.

Soleymani, who along with JK Aier, Costello senior associate dean for academic affairs and global engagement, and Ajay Vinze, dean of the Costello College of Business, recently visited the region to share how George Mason University is helping to develop entrepreneurial ecosystems that are adaptable, inclusive, productive, and sustainable.

Since its inception in 1987, George Mason University’s Early Identification Program (EIP) has been dedicated to empowering first-generation students to achieve their goals of higher education and thrive in academic environments.

By providing access to academic and socio-economic resources, George Mason’s EIP strives to bridge the opportunity gaps faced by motivated and talented middle and high school students seeking to become the first in their families to attend college.

George Mason University - Costello College of Business graduate Monica Amaya, BS Business ’26, an Honors College alumna and University Scholar, first got involved with EIP as an eighth-grader. The Manassas Park High School alumna credits EIP with giving her the support and the road map she needed to succeed in college. Read more on Monica’s story: https://ow.ly/yk2S50Z5x3H

The impact of this program extends beyond individual students, as George Mason University works in collaboration with its partners in Fairfax County, Prince William County, Alexandria City, Arlington County, Falls Church City, Manassas City, and Manassas Park. Together, they nominate, support, and graduate students annually, with over 2600 successful graduates to date.

At Costello, we’re developing a workforce that’s ready to meet the challenges of tomorrow, today.

The Professional Readiness Experiential Program (PREP), an experiential learning initiative within the George Mason University - Costello College of Business, bridges academic theory and industry practice, giving students hands-on experience working with industry professionals to solve real challenges. The program, started by Brian Ngac, assistant dean for centers and FedWriters Corporate Partners Faculty Fellow at Costello, provides a platform to publish projects through conference proceedings at local, national, and international levels.

“Collaborating with a group of diverse backgrounds and skill sets significantly broadened my expertise and knowledge. Having our paper published was incredibly meaningful, as it allowed our work to impact a wider audience beyond the classroom and served as a catalyst for my professional growth,” said Costello alumna Yasmin Jurban, BS Marketing and Business Analytics ’23.

George Mason University master's of social work student Wida Saber is making an impact – and the 2026 Patriot Pitch Competition helped her achieve it.

Saber participated in this year’s Patriot Pitch Competition with her venture, Rumi Legacy Schools, an education-based nonprofit, and secured second place in the Early-Stage Ventures track.

“I got support from the Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, which helped strengthen the structure and vision of my organization,” said Saber. “George Mason not only educated me, it also shaped who I am today. My mentors helped me grow into someone who can navigate complex systems, lead with purpose, and serve vulnerable communities with confidence and compassion.”

Congratulations to the 20 Fairfax County residents who graduated from the Workforce Innovation Success through Entrepreneurship (WISE) program on this major milestone achieved within their entrepreneurial journeys. 🎉

Through the Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship at the George Mason University - Costello College of Business, WISE expanded access to entrepreneurial training, fostered workforce transformation, and strengthened the regional economy. WISE equipped emerging founders with the entrepreneurial mindset, connected them to mentors, and provided consulting delivered by George Mason University students. This was an impactful experiential learning opportunity, and provided vital support that the entrepreneurs needed as they launched and scaled their ventures.

“Our job was to empower community members to create sustainable businesses, create more local jobs, contribute to the regional economy, and, most importantly, realize their dreams of starting a business,” said Rebecca Howick, director of operations and engagement for the Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship.

This program is made possible through a strategic partnership with the Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship within the Costello College of Business at George Mason University, Melwood, the W.I.S.H. Center, and Fairfax County (Department of Family Services).
