The US Sailboat Show will be in Annapolis in just a few weeks!
Now in its 43nd year, the United States Sailboat Show, October 4 - 8, 2012, attracts more than 50,000 boating enthusiasts from around the world to the waterfront of historic Annapolis, Maryland. The Chesapeake Bay town is also home of U.S. Naval Academy. Recognized worldwide as the premier sailing s...
Our faculty advisor, Professor Guido Cervone, was featured this week by the George Mason University News Desk for his research in using sea surface temperature measurements to determine the safest and fastest routes for sailing across the Gulf Stream!
A sailing hobbyist and occasional racer, Guido Cervone wanted a better way to pinpoint the exact location and extent of the Gulf Stream when crossing it in a small boat.

For the first time ever, Baltimore will host an Air Show. A handful of military units will perform flight routines over the Middle Branch River, just south of Fort McHenry, culminating with a forty-five minute performance by the U.S. Navy’s Blue Angels. This is a free event. Click here for more deta...

George Mason University's Intramural Battleship Competition
As a reminder to everyone, BoatUS has a great online safety course that is a great way to familiarize (or refresh) yourself with lots of important information about being safe on the water. And its FREE!
The BoatUS Foundation's Online Course is the only free Online Boating Safety Course approved by the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries.

There wasn't much wind today!
This weekend's weather isn't looking too good. We were hoping that it would clear up by now, but thunderstorms are still being forecasted for both Saturday and Sunday. So unfortunately, sailing could prove to be a bit on the dangerous side.
Lots of good information here. Written for racers, much of this applies to everyone.
This guide is a detailed introduction to the sport of sailboat racing. It focuses particularly on intercollegiate racing in dinghies, such as the FJ and the Laser. However, the ideas can be applied to other boats, including keelboats, windsurfers, and iceboats.
Following up on safety and rules of the road, here is some great information from US Sailing in a clear and concise format. Get familiar with it, because hands-on training is coming very soon!
So.. are we meeting next Tuesday evening? I reserved the big room for us. Maybe we can show the videos? Watch a sailing movie or something else sailing related?
Safety on the water is extremely important! We would like for everyone to complete a boater's safety course, which is offered online for FREE! This is an excellent way for you to begin preparing to get out on the water.
How do you feel about calling a meeting for sometimes next week? I can bring my 420 on campus and rig it. It is an opportunity to familiarize with a boat, learn the terminology, and better prepare for the first day on the water.
I also have a video from US sailing talking about boat handling and the 'rules of the road', primarily from a racing point of view. I can reserve the GMU cinema or one of the other big auditorium classrooms to show the video if many people want to come.
Does anyone have any thoughts on how we can improve our meetings in the future?
